Hello all
I was lucky enough to have my over 50s stool sample pick up an issue 2 and a half years ago, I quickly had a colonoscopy and they found a pollop which was removed and sent away for examination and I was to get results within 6-8 weeks, I never heard anything in that time and presumed all was ok. It was about another 3 weeks after I had a phone call to say that they were sorry about the delay but my pollop had been sent to many different places for examination as it was unusual but undead cancerous. I was advised to have my sigmoid colon removed to which I agreed, unfortunately when they removed the pollop they didn't mark where it came from( apparently they are supposed to mark with a wee tattoo to show it's whereabouts) so I had to have a sigmoidoscopy to try and locate scarring evidence but they couldn't find it. Anyway I went in had the op and they removed more than they expected too from rectum to top of descending colon.
Anyway a would say I have now fully recovered and tests are ok, still have a few CT scans etc to go but my problem is the very foul smelling wind, is this normal? It is very embarrassing for me and I will only go in a public loo if nobody else in there, my long suffering wife puts up with it but will sometimes sleep in the spare room because of the smell, I have tried different foods but nothing really seems to help. Any help greatly appreciated.
Hi 1an H and a warm welcome to the board. I’m sure many of us on here can relate to your problem and I don’t have a definitive answer I’m afraid although I can suggest a few ideas for you? Is your bowel function regular or do you suffer from constipation? I find if I’m getting ready to ‘go’ then there will be a lot of gurgling and trumping. If I’ve not been for a day or so then they can be pretty foul - almost like it’s been ‘rotting’ inside me - sorry if tmi.
Food diaries are boring but worth a try - things like a few beers or fish and chips can be a trigger for me. Having just done sober october I’ve found that things have improved so might cut down on that front.
There are pocket size sprays that can be used in toilets - Fab a loo has been mentioned on here before or there’s one called poo pourri?
I’ve attached a link to an old post about wind and also one by a gastroenterologist about regaining bowel control - not sure if he covers wind or not?
Hope these help?
Take care
Karen x
Hi 1an H .
If colour of faeces is also off, maybe worth asking GP for a short course of antibiotics to rid any bacteria or infection?
