Afternoon everyone

Just a quick question. Is it usual for Dr's to request a CT scan, MRI scan and a PET scan?

I guess our treatment and investigations are as unique as we all are?

All answers welcome

  • Hi PaddyBud. I am on 3 monthly PET scans as I have secondary cancer of the lymphatic system. Never had an MRI scan in relation to my cancer but understand that a CT scan shows where the cancer is as does a PET scan but that the radioactive sugar they inject you with, effectively, lights up the cancer cells giving better definition. Over time PET scans can give your oncologist an idea of how actively your cancer might be spreading.

So, in my experience it is not unusual to have both CT and PET scans particular if your cancer is difficult to ‘see’. In my case even the PET scans haven’t fully quantified the extent of my cancer. The words ‘at least’ followed by a number is the usual result for me. But, on the plus side, whilst the cancer remains contained within my lymphatic system I have been assured I will, in general, feel well!

Hope your own scans go well.

    All the best.

  • I replied on your other post but my mum always got one just before surgery . Given yours in growing outside the colon they like all the images they can get . Gives them as much information as possible and surgeons always seem to think in terms of getting the best margins .

    Take care ,
