Colon cancer and the next steps

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer a couple of months ago and I’ve had a series of tests since then. The outcome is that I need surgery to remove it but because the surgery will impact on so many other organs, the decision has been made to have chemotherapy first in the hope the size will be reduced. The chemotherapy is a mixture of 2 and should not make me lose my hair. I just wanted to know if anyone else has been through this and could let me know what to expect.

  • Just wishing you all the best with your chemo.if you know the name of it ,it will help others who have had the same to comment on their experiances.

  • Hi Bumblebee53. I was diagnosed in April with 2 large tumours which needed to be shrunk before surgery took place. Due to the location of a tumour on the right of the colon I had a kidney stent fitted as a preventative measure which I do not know is there . I had 4 sessions of Capox which, unfortunately, haven’t worked. I haven’t lost my hair and the side effects (tingling in fingers when touching anything cold, lethargy and loss of taste) are now at a minimum or disappeared 4 weeks after finishing the chemo. I am waiting for a PET scan in a couple of weeks. A decision will then be made by the Christie hospital as to whether they’re too large to operate on. If I’m not accepted the leader of my MDT has told me it will mean more intense chemo.  I think my situation is fairly unusual and I still have no symptoms. Hope this helps and  I send you my best wishes.

  • Hi

many thanks for your response and insight into your journey.

  • I don’t know the name or the combination yet, the only thing I know is that it won’t make me lose my hair and it will make me feel rough but should not make me feel ill.

Will let you know that as soon as I do.
