Hi there
How are your days starting? Hopefully reasonably ok.
I’ve been wondering, and haven’t had the chance of asking my doctors yet, how long after chemo ends are our immune systems likely to be dodgy?
I should finish my capecitabine on Friday (a week later than planned as the doc advised an additional break due to my hands and feet). I’ve been really cautious about going anywhere busy like indoors at cafes because I’ve been quite determined I haven’t wanted to catch anything i can avoid catching, feeling worse, and risk delaying getting to the end of treatment. And it being summer, sitting outside cafes (in shade or sun creamed, covered up and hatted!) is fine with me! I’m now thinking about how quickly I’ll restart going to busy indoor places. A bit of info about immunity will help me suss out what is fact and what is being anxious or overly risk averse!
What approaches have other folk taken? Dodging busy places (and friends with ‘germs’) or simply doing what you can?
Thanks!
My oncology team said days 5-10 of your cycle is when you’re most vulnerable. I work in a charity shop, and wear a mask. I do avoid people who are coughing and sneezing, but always have done! My oncologist told me not to hide away at home, so I don’t intend to. Wishing you all the best. The world is a scarier place with cancer.
