Hi everyone I haven't been on here for a bit I'm getting really down ,I had part my bowel removed 3 yrs ago and was lucky I didn't need a stoma but the problem is I never go out because some times I have accidents and sometimes I'm just passing foul smelling wind does anyone else have this problem
Thankyou
Hi Kylkimry. I’ve only maybe had a couple of accidents and it seems to be when I’ve drunk more than I’ve eaten? A sneaky couple of tea time drinks in the pub one day triggered an accident and an early exit from the restaurant that we were eating in later that evening.
Do you keep a food diary to see if certain foods cause problems? We’re eating a lot of salads at the minute and iceberg lettuce has me rushing to the toilet with very loose stools. The bags of frilly stuff don’t seem quite as bad but I’ve started taking a loperamide before my evening meal. Having said that it can mean that I don’t go for a couple of days and that’s when the rancid wind seems to start. I’m sorry I’m not being much help and I’ve struggled to find the trigger but I also refuse to give up the foods (and drink) that I enjoy so I’ve only myself to blame I suppose.
Im attaching a link to a talk from a gastroenterologist that was on the bowel cancer uk board. Hopefully you’ll find it helpful or maybe your doctor could refer you to a local one?
Take care
Karen x
Thanks Karen
I do keep a diary of what I eat but can't seem to work out what causes it ,I started taking cbd oil a few months back for anxiety but had to stop that definitely made it worse .
Thanks for the link I will look at it later and maybe see my doctor my nurse told me try charcoal tablets or windeze for the smell but hasn't worked
Hi Kylkimry
i struggle at times. If I eat what I did when I had my Ileostomy then it’s manageable, if I decide to really enjoy something I really enjoy then I know the consequences. I tend to get the Loperamide out and prepare for toddler food for a couple of days.
It’s a pain and I found it distressing when in hospital for a lung op. My bowel was all over the place and the staff didn’t understand my anxiety about my bowel control. I drove them nuts whilst I was in Critical Care. I kept unplugging myself and going to the toilet. Ha ha. There was nothing to go to the toilet for. But those meds and being wired up was so stressful.
Take care.
Ann
Hi Kylkimry I had a bowel resection nearly four years ago. I eat a pretty high fibre diet and treats like crisps. I honestly used to get really upset about the excessive amount of wind, and wouldn’t go out. A couple of years ago I started a Pilates class and told my instructor about my problem. She made sure I had a place by the door in case I was worried. After a while I told those who were nearest to me and found them very supportive. The more I worried the worse I would be. I haven’t been able to identify any triggers. One day it’s something obvious like baked beans, the next it could be cheese! I’ve found the less I stress about it the less severe it is. Sounds simple, but takes time to get the confidence to think so what if I fart! As for the having accidents element, I found drinking with food, or soon after eating was a real problem. I now know I can have a few sips of a soft drink with dinner, but nothing for an hour or so after. My consultant did offer to prescribe a liquid form of loperamide to take before eating. It slows the process down and gives you more time before needing to go to the loo. Good luck.
Hi artsie
I always have a drink with a meal I will not have one now see if that helps its hard to find out what triggers it ,if I am at my daughters I always make sure iv got a change of clothes with me
As for the farting that wouldn't bother me as much if it weren't for the rancid smell it's just not normal it's really bad its worse if iv not been to the loo for a day ,I have got lopermide sometimes I take it but then struggle going to the loo for a few days
Thanks for your help hope ur ok
I was just thinking about what I do to help if I’ve taken loperamide. On Thursday I was doing a skydive, so as you can imagine I didn’t want to worry about having an accident! I took two loperamide after a very light breakfast. I know how painful constipation can be, so around teatime I drank lemon and ginger tea. I find that a hot drink, as hot as you can drink it without burning your mouth, seems to get the bowel working. Worth a try?
