Hi, i went for a colonoscopy because for about a year i have been having trouble going to the toilet and been having alot of blood everytime i go, the doctor told me there and then that he found a 50mm tumour and he was 95% sure it was cancer, i am currently going through the scans etc and waiting to see if its spread and the stage, i have a couple of questions that i cant seem to find the answer 2 onlibe and tbh i just need to stay off google because thats just freaking me out more. So my question is i no 50mm is quite large but does the size of the tumour make it more likely that the cancer has spread?? I have no other symptoms other than bowel issues but i am starting to symptom spot now lol but sure its just me being overly paranoid is this normal?? Also because the tumour is that size wpuld i need chemo to shrink it b4 they remove it?? I have just turned 36 years old my youngest just being 2 so i am really worried about not being aound for them and tbh thats the only thing that keeps popping in my head. Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance for any replys
Hi Kirsty. Just a short reply from me but hopefully some of the others will be along shortly. No, size is not an indication of spread - the scans will show how far it has grown into the bowel wall and whether it has gone through the wall which is when there can be a chance of spread.
Chemoradiotherapy or chemo before the op will depend on where the tumour is - rectal tumours usually involve chemoradiotherapy- and whether they suspect any lymph node involvement which they blast with chemo before surgery.
Hope this helps? My tumour was 40mm but shrank to 10mm after chemoradiotherapy in 2016. Stay away from google but you can ask anything you like on here and we’re happy to share advice and experience
Take care
Karen x
Thank you for the reply, ah thats good to know that the size doesnt mean its spread, looking at the report off the colonoscopy it says that the tumour is located in the rectum area says 10cm from the anal verge, again unsure excatly what that means, im still waiting for a phonecall of the nurses so i can ask them, im assuming maybe monday now they will ring now?
Hi, Kirsty87 no size is not an indicator, it is slow growing, usually. My scan indicated a hazy node , and tumour was 7cm, straight to surgery, laparoscopic. Biopsy then said no node involvement but there was vascular invasion, so chemo after.
You are in the tricky period, once you know a plan after the MDT, you will probably feel more in control.
Hi Gemmary, im glad to hear another say its not a indicator, i agree soon as i no more il feel alot more in control, my mind at the moment is just going overtime thinking of the worse outcome which im sure is pretty normal untill you know exactly whats going on.
Thank you 4 taking the time to reply, aw good to know yours didnt spread for you, i am trying to stay positive, my 2 year old dont give me time to think so thats a good thing lol. And yes i have just been sticking with them when looking for information, according to google i should be dead lol. Thanks again
