My Dad has had symptoms of Bowel cancer for a long time now and been fobbed of by his GP. He finally had a stool sample tested which came back positive so received a follow up virtual colonoscopy which found growths in him Colon and Kidney which he was told about on June 22nd. He has had scans sins this and after many phone calls from myself was finally booked in for an Endoscopy on 17th July where they confirmed the Colon cancer.

We were told the MDT would be held yesterday, 25th of July and should expect to be booked in to see an Oncologist this week or early next week. He has had to chance the results for this MDT and has been told he has an appointment on 3rd Aug with a general surgeon. Up to now he has not had any contact from anyone to explain the process or with a specialist nusre and no mention at all of an Oncologist. They have not made any mention of a biopsy of the growth on his Kidney.

When he see's this general surgeon next week it will be 6 weeks since the initial results from the virtual colonoscopy which just seems like a very long time for him to have to wait for anything, he hasn't been told what stage he is at, if they think they can treat it, absolutely zero information at all. Any time any of us phone to speak to the secretaries we are told it is not the right one and someone will phone back. Its a joke and I worry as he has been complaining to his GP for 5 years this cancer may already be quite set in.

Is this the normal process as when my sister has cancer she was seen by many people and had someone she could contact. He Chemo started within 6 weeks where my Dad wont have even spoken to a cancer nurse.

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your dad . This part can be slow and sluggish especially over the summer with several departments accommodating holiday leave . It’s a painful wait for sure and certainly some move quicker than others and seem a bit more accessible. However just when you think it’s ground to a halt it speeds up and once  you get under the care of a consultant it seems to improve considerable . The colonoscopy wait can slow the whole process down . Apparently a six to eight week delay here .

However your dad ‘s Gp should be kept fully informed and over the years we have found this a great back up . Not sure if that’s a good fit for your dad as it sounds as though he has had difficulty accessing a diagnosis in the first place .

However it’s encouraging that he has been pencilled in to see a surgeon. They will have all the scans and biopsies and should be able to tell him the staging and treatment plan . Hopefully things should improve from here and I have found the surgical side once you get to this stage much smoother in delivery .

But I do fully agree . It’s a horrible process that has not improved in the years I have been watching it . However I do wish your dad every success and hope things improve for him going forward .

  • I am in exactly the same position, my fist colonoscopy was April 6th, then a sigmoidoscopy June 9th, mdt meeting June 26th my consultant appointment July 31st, still no date for surgery! I was advised by my McMillan nurse to raise a complaint as it is totally unacceptable. I know I have to have a left hemicolectomy,

With annual leave and strikes every thing has been delayed.. Anxiety levels through the roof.

Fingers crossed your dad and I get some answers next week !

  • That’s  awful   I would have expected the process to speed up especially after the colonoscopy and mdt ! We are in Scotland so not hit with the strikes but apparently the wait for a colonoscopy is six to eight weeks . But after that it has always had a date in the diary within the month roughly sometimes a lot quicker .

  • I know it’s of no comfort to you, but back in 2019 I had a colonoscopy and could see that it must be cancer, but still waited around 6-8 weeks before I saw a surgeon, and another couple of weeks before I saw an oncologist. I was given a specialist nurse at my colonoscopy because we knew I had cancer. I am really sorry that your dad’s GP has been so slow to act with him having had symptoms of bowel cancer. If you know who the surgeon is maybe give his secretary a call. I asked my hospital switchboard who mine was. He/she is often the person who knows what’s going on, and may be able to tell you who to contact in terms of specialist nursing team. Good luck going forward. I hope you are looking after yourself and your dad.
