Side effects after colon surgery

Hi

I had part of my bowel(colon) removed 2 weeks back, I stayed in hospital for  days and discharged. No stoma. Waiting for results next week to decide on chemo.

I am having numbness in my right thigh for last 1 week and I also feel cold arm , also a bit of numbness in my right hand.  It hasn't gone very disturbing yet , I can do my activities normal. The nurses aren't responding well, is this normal?? Has anyone felt same after colon removal ? How long will it last if so? I see lot of articles linking to peripheral neuropathy , but the GP doctor won't refer to Neurologist as its nor very worse. Should I need to consult private neurologist for safer side ? Please advice.

Thanks

  • Hi  I think peripheral neuropathy tends to be caused by chemo rather than surgery although I notice that Skimbo recently mentioned in their post titled Chemotherapy that they had suffered nerve damage to their left leg from surgery? Perhaps you could try posting in the Ask the Nurse section for advice?

     Take care

  • Thanks a lot for replying, that's something new for me that we can post question to ask the nurse, I will ask them.

    Thanks again

  • Hi BNotts

I had a low anterior resection 2 years ago and suffered with a strange feeling in my right leg for about 8 weeks afterwards. Not numbness as such, just a peculiar sensation that got worse after walking any distance. It gradually resolved itself. I'd also had excruciating back pain immediately after surgery when it was explained that, during the op, they have you in really awkward positions on the table, sometimes for quite a while and it was possibly a bit of nerve or disc inflammation. I suspect that the two were related but, like I say, it gradually improved.

I hope that you get some reassurance and things improve soon. Take care.

  • Thanks, exactly that a kind of altered sensation in my right leg compared to left leg and its not complete numbness. Good to hear that it resolved  after few weeks. Hope it don't cause much issue and goes away soon.
