Hi there
just off losding if that’s ok.
I started having issues in September 2022 and was told I needed to have my gall bladder removed following an x ray in December as not thought emergency. However the X-ray found a shadow on my liver. I had an MRI the Thursday before Xmas eve and was told between Xmas and new year that it was secondary cancer and they needed to find the primary source.
in early Jan I had a CT scan which showed it was bowel cancer and subsequently had a colonoscopy (which was pretty painful). I was diagnosed with stage IV inoperable bowel cancer that has spread to my liver and my abdomen lining. My symptoms previously had just not given me any reason to think it could be bowel cancer. I have had 6 rounds of chemo and am just starting another 6. I’ve had a latest CT scan and whilst it hasn’t spread any further it hasn’t shrank either. My life has been on hold for the first 6/rounds and I needed to understand my prognosis in order that I can plan accordingly ie. Holidays etc ( I have always been a planner). They have said I am looking at 2+21/2 years. I am absolutely devastated and potentially won’t make my 60th birthday. I have been trying to stay positive and keep up the good fight but this news has just taken the wind out of me and my head is in bits. I know they say that no-one can really tell you your life expectancy and I had clung on to the fact that I maybe one of the lucky ones that made it to the 5 year survival but obviously not. How do I move forward now knowing this. I have not told anyone else not even my husband or 28yr old daughter as don’t want to scaremonger if I’m overthinking things. Any advice greatly appreciated
xx
Hi Backing Dino
Please do off load here . It’s exactly what we are here for .
Just wondering if you think counselling would help you . Macmillan has teamed up with Bupa to offer six free counselling sessions and others with a stage 4 diagnosis have reported to have found it to be beneficial.
I can see what you are saying regarding the stats . It’s something my mum has always avoided . Has Hipec surgery been investigated with the surgeons who carry it out ? . I am a big believer in asking specialists directly .
PLease don’t lose sight of stability . That is also very desirable. It has been held at bay and that’s important .
My mum has had lots of bumps along the way . In lots of ways the pipeline of treatments has kept delivering one step at a time . Just now she is using Cetuximab as a single agent and she is not deteriorating on it and heading into 14 years as a stage 4 patient .
Always here to listen so please keep
taking ,

Thank you much appreciated. Will do some more research re your suggestions. I always tried to avoid google especially the stats but sometimes your head just won’t let be.
thank you again
Dino
This is a link to some info from St Marks hospital . Just so you don’t have to trawl the net . I am from Scotland but I think Basingstoke , Imperial and Christie’s have also got surgeons that use it . As you will be well aware there is Criteria for all procedures but its something to discuss with your team . Surgery often comes down to size and location .
Also Bowel cancer U.K. has a FB support group for stage 4 patients . They have a lot of information on current procedures etc and some support .
Take care ,
