Hi everyone

I'm Steph from the Community team Slight smile

Here is a new thread for carers, family and friends. This is a space for you to chat, share experiences and support each other through issues related to your loved ones bowel cancer.  The previous thread will shortly be locked as it was getting rather long which can make it difficult to navigate.

Please remember that we also have other dedicated spaces on the Community for carers, family and friends. These spaces exist so you can support each other away from members of the forum who might be dealing with their own cancer diagnosis:

Family and friends forum

Carers only forum

Supporting someone with incurable cancer forum

You would be welcome to set up another new thread like this in one of the above forums. Please just let us know if you would like any help?

We hope you will continue to find lots of support from each other and the Community. We're here to help, so please do let us know if you have any questions or support needs by emailing us at community@macmillan.org.uk

  • Shocking what opticians charge these days as well as dentists which is another rip off - if you can get one!!

Have filled garden bin as the wind a rain has snapped and ruined bedding plants and red hot pokers and bent over, never mind there’s always next year, it’s been a rubbish summer. Lastnight I put some of Kevin’s ashes in the soil around the flowering cherry tree I bought which is now Kevin’s tree which is just outside the French doors so I can see it.

This is the way my life is now, never in a million years did I think it would be like this, on my own having to do everything that you did as a team, planning holidays going out laughing and having fun- it’s all been ripped away and when you sit and reflect it’s true you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.

maudling over so tell myself just get on with it it’s up to me now

Hooe you all have some better days

  • Helen you are right. I have started on the blinking garden again. I hate gardening with a passion but it needs doing. It just looks like Steptoe and sons even my brother said you need to get a gardener in and clear the rubbish. Son in law took him to his mothers in Newcastle as the bungalow is sold subject to contract and he even brought home another few items, an old radiogramme/gramophone and more table and chairs.  The garage is full again. I am not best pleased as you can imagine.

we have the motorhome as well that he is building a garage for but doubt we will use it again.

vicky I hope all goes well for today.

to everyone else sending big hugs Maggie xx

  • Hi Everyone,

Well just back from the hospital with my sister and it's not the news we wanted to hear unfortunately. Margaret went in and got her colonoscopy and I was sitting in the waiting area and then they came and told me that Margaret was just recovering after her test so they said I could go and get a coffee and come back in about 20 minutes so I went out and got a cold drink and then I went to the desk and she was just about to phone through to find out if Margaret was ready and the nurse appeared and said Margaret was waiting so I went up and got her and she said the doctor will be by with the results shortly so the minute she said that it was `Deja vu` because this is exactly how it all happened with Jay, I told the nurse that I had just lost Jay two months ago to bowel cancer and she couldn't believe it. Then the doctor appeared and sat down and spoke to us. They got the camera around her colon ok and she said that there was a very small polyp on her right hand side which they were able to remove but there is an area that they are concerned about just under her ribcage I think she said just above her bowel so they have taken a biopsy and she will need to go for a CT scan. The docotr said she is very pale also and may be anaemic also because she can be quite breathless.  I don't know how I did it but I managed to drive home maybe just the adrenaline kicking in. The nurse did say to me was I driving and I said yes and in a cruel twist of fate she gave us a card with the phone number of a cololectoral nurse specialist and it turned out it was the one who was dealing with Jay going through his treatment. I just do not know what to think about it. Because of the way she is it is hard to say how she is feeling as she seems no different. So that's where we are now. I must have done something very bad to deserve this.

    Vicky

  • Dear Vicky. They have removed the polyp and now just wait and see what the results are from the ct scan. I know you will worry.  I can’t believe how time passes. Be kind to yourself as well. I do feel for you as it is such a worrying time. She may need a blood test for anemia as well. Just come and rant and rave as we are all here for you.

sending you a virtual hug Maggie xx

  • So now it’s just a waiting game, at least they removed the polyp and you both just have to wait for result of biopsy and cut scan. There’s nothing more you can do although I know it a worrying time. Maybe it hasn’t hit Margaret yet what’s happening. Try to be strong but I am thinking of you.

  • Thanks Girls!

Just had a phone call from heamotology and they want Margaret to go in overnight and get a blood transfusion and an iron infusion as they took blood samples from her today and it has come back that her blood count is very low and feel she needs a transfusion asap as well as an iron infusion which would mean her going through A & E to get it done. They said going in tomorrow but but it would take a bit of organising for that and they would rather she get it done soon as. This they feel is what has been causing the breathlessness so with a bit of luck maybe they will get the CT done while she's there too. Hitting the ground running again seemingly which is a good thing. Keep you all updated.

  • Hi

Just want to say I am so sorry you are going through all this with your sister . It must be very triggering .

However getting in through an and e is one sure way to get the Ct quickly as you say and I found the Queen Elizabeth very thorough .

Not what you need just now at all and for that I am so sorry .

    Take special care ,

  • So much for them getting Margaret in asap. The haematologist who phoned said they ere going to arrange this not actually saying if they were to send an ambulance or if we were to make our own way to The  Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she is to go no problem for me to drive there but phoned ambulance service no ambulance booked. Phoned A& E they've no record of her coming in. Sent the dog to William for the night incase its another Jay scenario and i need to at A& E with her for most of the night, This is all i need just now.
