I’m so sorry to ask so many questions. Dad had his MRI brain and liver, the brain has come negative but he now has stage 4 liver cancer spread from his bowel.
My parents have not been offered any sort of follow up from palliative care or anything else. He has been told there is nothing they can do, and just to ring his cancer nurse specialist if they need anything. Is this normal?

who will arrange pain relief etc when the time comes?
sorry to ask xx

  • Hi

There are many ways to access more help when required but with my dad I used his Gp and he escalated it through social service . With my mum he contacted the district nurses and oncology when required . The specialist nurses work alongside the consultant and most hospitals have palliative teams that come in when they feel it is necessary.

However your dad should not be left without information and the family wondering . This causes stress . If you phone the helpline it’s confidential and they will be able to go through the protocol for the area you live in . Your Dads GP and reestablish contact with his oncologist at any time so please don’t feel abandoned but you definitely need to know the process.

Please do keep asking questions . It’s so important as it feels more supportive when you know how to access help .

  • Hi Hblight

I am sorry to hear your dad's not been supported well.

For one in our family, i found the macmillan nurse who was allocated to visit in home at palliative stage + usual GP a positive team to help manage with symptom + pain management at end of life stage.

We'd tried the incredible Marie Curie service as well as they offered an element of respite support and could in theory work nights, but they didn't have resource available in time. We contacted and engaged them directly. This page on their website gives their helpline number but also some practical guidance on end of life:
