Hi, my husband has rectal cancer, very low down. He had radiotherapy then tamis, now needs total mesorectal excision due to histology finding t2 tumor in the removed tissue. We are waiting for a date, it is 5 weeks since the tamis, thinking how long is OK to wait for the tme. worrying if its in the lymph or vascular system it could be spreading . Thank you for any experience, information or comments.
Hello moria
I am sorry to see that your husband has rectal cancer. I see that he has had some radiotherapy and then tamis but now needs some surgery due to the histology. I understand how worrying it is waiting for this to be done and I understand that you are concerned about possible spread. Are you able to talk to his CNS team? Maybe they can give you a bit of reassurance and also a provisional idea of when the surgery may be performed.
I had pelvic radiotherapy in August and September last year and was told that the radiotherapy would continue to be working for several months after it has finished. Naturally you and your husband want the surgery done as soon as possible but with the treatment he already has it sounds like he still has some protection?
I hope that your husbands appointment comes through quickly and that his surgery goes well.
Jane
Hi Jane thank you so much for your reply, it helps to put things into perspective. Since my message we now have a date for the surgery in 5 weeks time. The consultant has reassured us that the 5 weeks is to allow further healing to take place after the tamis not due to any waiting list or delay. My mind now has gone to what might help the healing process.
I very much hope that you are getting along OK and your treatment is successful.
Best wishes
Moria.
I am glad the appointment has come through for 5 weeks time and that the consultant has reassured you. I was told I had to be 6 weeks post surgery to allow for healing before I could start chemo- so a similar situation to your husband- although different cancer- healing needed to take place before further treatment. Hope that you can both relax a bit now you have seen the consultant.
