Bowel to lung metatases

Hello,

Someone I love dearly, was diagnosed with Bowel cancer last year. They had half their bowel removed, some lymph nodes and was told the R number was high, meaning the cancer had knotted into local tissues and muscles. They then had 3 rounds of chemotherapy and was given good news that they believed to had got rid of any active cells. They are on a five year plan, the outcome of this looked positive.

Unfortunately there was a 'but.' The 'but' was actually that a nodule had appeared in the left lung so would be treated as metastases cancer until a biopsy was done. About 2 months ago a CT scan was done and a second nodule near the first was found, my loved one had a segment removed about 3 weeks ago.

Once again there is a 'but.' This time a third nodule in the right lung has been found. This was even more scary.

About 5 days ago it was confirmed by biopsy that the nodules in the lungs are cancerous.

What do I do? We don't know what stage any of these cancers are, the nurse that called with the latest findings had no further treatment plan to discuss, which I found very odd?? Are they going to complete further chemotherapy or radiotherapy?

My main worry is that the five year plan is now reduced and I don't know how I'll cope with that information. I'm trying to be positive and take each meeting and each piece of information as it comes but I'm worried I'll crumble and be no help to my loved one at all. :(

This is my first time here, I appreciate any information.

  • Hi

    Welcome to the forum .

So sorry to hear about your family member but so pleased they are very much loved .

If you click on my user name you can read about how my mum’s lung was treated . I need to update it as she is currently having treatment for a further lung spread . However if you note her  first lung tumour was detected back in 2016 . She scanned clear until covid and they discharged her and this spread was found whilst in hospital for something else . She got big gaps between them showing up . Her lung surgeon talked about it all being part of the original spread with her primary being removed back in 2009 . So that’s a very slow growing spread which lung mets are quite often .

She never had post op chemo as her team only ever treat visible disease if her cancer has spread and wanted to keep all her options to use for the future .
She is an older lady now and using a targeted drug only and getting a very good response .

in the beginning stats and prognosis were hard to hear but with time we learnt to focus more on her own cell biology and behaviour and get a feel for that . She has been a stage 4 patient for 14 years .

Your relative does not have to have a prognosis if they don’t wish one . My mum prefers to hear just her options and see what happens to her as an individual.

Its great you care and the lung has various different options for treatment and that’s encouraging in itself .

Fear is horrible but you can balance that out with the thoughts of good treatment .

    Take care ,

  • Hello Court,

Thank you so much for that information. It's very reassuring to hear that treatment has supported your mum for so long. I'm hoping we will get some more information at the next consultation.

Everything seems to be moving so fast it's hard to process what's already happened and been achieved, let alone think about what the future holds. Especially when the diagnosis was only a year ago.

I'll speak to my loved one about information they want and don't want, perhaps that will help and support them and relieve some worry.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • Hi Familyfirst

Sorry that you’re going through this

I just wondered have they confirmed the lung nodules are cancerous from the Bowel Cancer and it’s a spread

Its just I had bowel cancer treated then on my yearly scan some suspicious nodules were detected.
Those proved to be primary so I’ve had two primary cancers

Sending you a hug and my very best wishes

  • Hello Artsie,

Sorry to hear that, hope you are coping OK and not too many side effects from treatment.

Unfortunately, yes, the lung nodules have appeared from the primary bowel cancer.

Kind regards, and sending love and hugs back x

  • I hope that you get the treatment plan soon and things can move forward. I found waiting the hardest

    Take care
