My Rising Colon

I've done my pre-op and got my date, 19th for surgery to remove about 80mm of colon and re-connect. So I'm not going to have a bag.

I earlier had keyhole so they've had a look around. I've had three scans, one upper body, one abdomen and one again on the bowel. Upper body clear abdomen clear the bowel cancer hasn't grown since my last scan in January so I'm feeling confident.

They said about five days in. I know I'm going to be sore can anyone give me some advise on what to expect after?

  • Hi Jagman and good to hear that it’s not too long to wait for your op. Yes 5 days is about the average length of stay. Any pain will be well managed by the nurses and they will keep on top of any discomfort for you. They will get you out of bed the day after your op and encourage you to walk about as soon as you feel able. You will initially have a few drips and tubes in but these will be removed gradually over time. Once home it’s advisable to avoid lifting anything heavier than a kettle with 1 cup of water in and no driving for 5-6 weeks.

I’ve attached a link to a booklet about the op and what to expect and there’s some handy hints on things to take in with you - an extra long charging cable is a good one and also ear plugs. You’ll be woken up at regular intervals to check your vitals so nap when you can and focus on getting back to your lovely comfy bed at home.

Hope it all goes well and please keep us posted?

  • Hi Jagman

In autumn last year I had surgery on the opposite side to you. For many patience, they can be in and out in just a few days. Others need a longer stay while things are controlled and checked.

Recovery time is up to your body to direct, but a strong positive mind and patience can help too.

I'd suggest not worrying about duration and just allow the doctors and your body to find you the best outcomes possible.

As for hospital - I'd suggest taking in your favorite flavoured rice cakes for post op nibbles if you don't feel like meal or just fancy a snack. And don't forget to pack a set of loose fitting clothes for your departure day.

    All the best.
