I had my operation on Thursday to remove the cancer from the right side of my bowel. After keyhole surgery I was released from hospital yesterday (Sunday). Now comes the process of getting better. Still in some pain, and it's frustrating not being able to go to the gym. As my nurse said, it may look nothing from the outside with a few small cuts but inside was pretty major surgery.

As a normally active person I think the coming weeks are going to be hard but I'm determined to listen to my body and not overdo things. Onwards and upwards

  • Hi @Tony1960 and congrats on getting through the op - it’s always nice to be back in your own bed. I was told no lifting anything heavier than a kettle with 1 cup of water in for at least 6 weeks. I appreciate that will be frustrating if you’re used to going to the gym but you’ll be at higher risk of a hernia so try to be patient!

Start with short walks, build your strength back up and rest when you need to

    Take care

  • Hi Tony1960,

The 6wks Kareno62 mentions is important to allow healing and avoid un-necessary complications. I'd also suggest low fibre/residue diet while bowel recovers.

Maybe now is a great time for some mind gym exercise Wink.

Good luck with your recovery and hope the weeks fly by for you

  • Hi Tony - I had a stage 3 tumour removed from my sigmoid colon by robotic surgery, that was 6 weeks ago. About 2 1/2 weeks post surgery I was walking, golfing and cycling, after 5 weeks I was doing lightweight weights and gym. It all depends on how you feel. Do some press ups, how do your stomach muscles feel. Build up very gradually don’t push it.
I start 12 weeks of chemo tomorrow, just have to get on with it, not sure how it’s going to affect my activities. I suspect I’m not going to feel very energetic but that’s fine if it means in the long run I’m going to  survive.
