Hi all last posted when we were waiting to attend out 1st oncology appointment which we have done today. We have now been told my husband ha stage 4 bowel cancer & are offering palliative care. BeFingers crossed prognosis is they can mange & control with chemotherapy the worse is the news we all dread to hear. Fingers crossed Fingers crossed it is the former for us. I want to scream Scream why him he’s only 49 why can’t they cure him. We are waiting for a portal line to be fitted then chemo here we come.

  • Hi

It’s a horrible appointment when you have to sit and listen to all of that . However the hope is that the treatment achieves enough to open up other options . If you click on my user name you can read how my mum has navigated palliative care for the last 14 years . I need to update it as she is currently back on treatment .

Has it spread to other organs ? I can get you some information you might find helpful .

You do get into a routine and once the adrenaline settles it can be good to look at how to stay active during treatment . We have had many people through here where treatment has opened up other options .

    Take care ,

This booklet is quite good at explaining the difference in treatments . Bowel cancer is quite fortunate at having a lot of different approaches to a spread . Initially they do like to gain stability and hopefully shrinkage . They rescan and his case will go back to the mdt and if there is a way to introduce other approaches they do that . My mum ended up with two liver resections and one lung resection after successful chemo . She started out as inoperable.

Her motto was always “ Best foot forward “ . It takes time to digest the information , learn how to live a good life around treatment . Accept there are rotten days but also good ones . In fact since my mum’s diagnosis we have some wonderful good family holidays and times .

Take care and you both have a great attitude.

Cancer has some great language . My mum went from significant spread to significant shrinkage . The man next to her went from significant spread to radical radiotherapy . Hope he hears some of this news in the future too .
