PICC line protection

I had a PICC line inserted for my 2nd cycle of capox and it was very successful at abolishing the discomfort of venous access and the oxplatin infusion. I was given a tubigrip sleeve to cover and support the PICC site and the 3-4 inches of attached tubing. It is not very successful as the ends roll up and down my upper arm with activity and sleeping in bed. I am thinking of ordereing a PICC cover from Amazon. Has anyone any advice on the best, most comfortable and reliable way of managing this?

  • Hi. I seemed to manage ok with just the tubigrip but the nurses tended to fold the tubing up so it all fitted behind the sticky plastic seethrough plaster thing? Mine was quite high up and on the inside of my arm a bit so maybe that helped? Hopefully someone who’s used a picc line cover will be along shortly x

  • Hi SAH1958, the tubigrip is just to keep it clean and tidy, the PICC line wont come out on its own. You will no doubt be having it re-dressed soon so talk to the nurses but otherwise how about just using a little of the type of  white plaster that comes in rolls  that holds the cotton wool on when you have an ordinary blood test to keep it in place. I found that useful. I think if you got a cover you might find that more uncomfortable to wear all the time.

The only cover I had was for the shower and I wouldn't have wanted to wear that for long!

    All the best, John

  • Hello SAH1958.  I used PICC line covers.  My PICC line entered about 1/2 way up my upper arm on the inside and I too found the tubigrip would roll up at the edges.  I got mine online from PICC-ME (hope I can say that), but there are other places too.  I felt the covers were less noticeable than just showing the tubigrip and I liked the slightly firmer more secure feeling around my arm, they are about 18cm long.

    Best wishes

  • Yes mine is in the same place. I have a big arm and the tubigrip slipped down with activity and in bed. There is about 2 inches of tubing plus the port for the needle hanging free. I did orders cover from a different company but it also slipped with activity. I have solved the concerns while sleeping by covering the PICC and the cover with a bandage which is more comfortable and controls the loose hanging tubing. I have ordered a cover from the company you suggested and will let you know how I get on. Thanks for the recommendation.
