Thought it was too good to be true

Evening everyone,

Following news that I'm all clear after chemo, liver resection, radiotherapy, pelvic extenteration, my CNS called out of the blue to let me know they have looked again at my scans (they were outsourced apparently) and there are 2 pelvic nodes that look suspicious and my CEA is up to 8.  They are trying to get me in for a PET scan on Monday and then will decide on a plan.

Anyone had similar?  I'm in need of some positivity.  I was just starting to get my life back, I'm floored.

  • Hello Star74!

Sorry to hear that. Yes you will be `floored` as you put it. This time last year Jay and I were getting our lives on track after he got the all clear from his bowel cancer operation in January last year. I asked if he needed post-surgery chemo and was told no not necessary. Five months down the line and well here we are again back to square one. Some of these micro cells they talk about that can't be detected in a scan have obviously been present and reformed. I felt really bitter at that that they said chemo wasn't necessary- even as a precaution because I feel that is something that could have been done to prevent it. Life is so cruel!. I'm so sorry you are going through this. This is how we found out Jay's cancer was back his CEA numbers were up and they sent him for a CT scan which confirmed its return. I'm glad- well not glad! that's the wrong choice of words- pleased that we are not the only ones going through this. Jay is currently recovering from sepsis which was quite serious so for that they have stopped his chemo for now until such times as they think he will be fit enough to restart it. He had a telephone consultation with his oncologist last week as because of the sepsis his mobility is limited so felt he couldn't attend his appointment in person. His oncologist told him as he only came out of hospital on February 22nd he still needs time to recover they haven't ruled out putting him back on chemotherapy for now, but he needs to be fit enough to be able to tolerate it again. I wish you well with your upcoming tests. Hope it all works out for you.

  • Hi

So sorry to hear this . A couple of things standing out for me .  For The nodes not to be noticed they must surely be very subtle changes . Hoping the pet scan clarifies this in a good way .

However we have had people here who have undergone further treatment with good outcome .
You respond very well to systemic treatment but saying that I don’t want you to have to endure more .

So for me I am holding on to ruling out than ruling in .

We have had a gentleman   who  had a complete response to treatment with a recurrence in pelvic lymph nodes .  Recommenced treatment and again responded and this opened up other options for him . His name slips my mind just now but I will have a look around .

You are very responsive to treatment so please hold onto that .

I hate that you have to go through this process again but the other point I wanted to make . We have had loads of people having to get PET scans only for the situation to be more normal Lymph nodes doing their function other than  cancer .

I am thinking of you and always here for a chat .

  • Thank you  , so sorry to hear what you have both been going through.  Its such a blow to hear all clear, gradually and cautiously rebuild your like and then out of the blue, it's back.

I still find it hard to believe enlarged nodes were missed but fortunate that my Onc is very thorough and they looked over it again, otherwise it would be another 3 months before anything was picked up.

I hope Jay's recovery goes well and he is able to get back on the chemo. Take care. X

  • Sending you strength to see you over the weekend till you get scan.
They seem to be on the ball and dealing with quickly , hopefully outcome will give you peace of mind . Sending some virtual flowers Bouquet

  • Oh  I’m really sorry to read you have more worries to deal with after everything you’ve gone through already. Especially when you were doing so well.

Good advice and points made by court as usual, and I hope you can get the scan on Monday and move forward with a new plan if needed.

    Sarah xx
