Hi, so im needing some advice my poor grandma got diagnosed with bowel cancer(rectum) 23rd jan 23 13 days after she lost her husbandc the staff surgeon consultant nurses been amazing.

However she had surgery done 12 days ago for a stoma bag she had two blood and iron infusion done while she had a week stay in hospital. She came to my house on monday jusy gone on the understanding from the hospital staff im there to help her (quite honestly ive become a carer, stoma nurse district nurse, while shes had no visit apart from 5 mins yday, i heard her get up middle of the night wednesday and i then woke up went to toilet she told me there was some blood on the towel i looked there was a biggish amount, then she got up really fast and removed some toilet roll from in her knickers and there was alot of blood, ahe told the nurse this yday they said its ‘normal’ bairing in mind this was a first for us. ive began to notice  yesterday there started to become a strong odour, i asked to look and check out and she had dried feaces to her bottom, and had some on a pad, fast forward to today and the smell is worse i helped her get a shower and she told me she was going to poo and it all just came away from her anus, then she said on the toilet heard a plop noise and she had been to toilet and i looked and the toilet was full of dark water, and again tonigbt i popped out came home and the smell again, i asked to look and her pad was full and i mean full all up her back etc all full of brown watery poo but yet her bag what we put on at 2:35 this afternoon is still clean and cry and not even a smear in the bag itself, im struggling a little as i have a 7 nearly 8 year old and hes asked questions, is this something i shoild be concerned over or is this morning, any advice will be muchly appreciate right now xx

  • Hi Ell23

Sounds like you're doing an amazing job at a very difficult time.

I'd suggest contacting ypur grandma's colorectal nurses as I believe they will be best to advise, based on specific information they know about her op and what/where should be happening.

If you can't get hold of ypur colorectal nurses swiftly, then you can also try the "ask a nurse" function on the Macmillan site.

Good luck and well done for everything your doing.

  • Hi  Please give the support desk on here a ring and ask their advice but if I’m honest I would go to A & E. It’s acceptable to pass a little poo from the bottom when you have a stoma but it sounds like your grandma is passing a lot and it’s bypassing the stoma bags which doesn’t sound right. After my op I started passing a foul smelling brown/green liquid from my bottom and it turned out to be an infected fluid that had build up around the rejoin where the staples had leaked.
If she’s only been discharged 12 days ago then you could also try ringing the ward that she was on and they could get in touch with the consultant.
Please let us know how you get on?

    Take care

  • Hi ELL23

as previous good advice replies … I’d seek medical help now , the blood loss alone can be having an effect on top of any possible infection or medical problem

I don’t know which part of UK your in but I’d ask for continence garments provision for your grandma and some support services for personal care .. to help you in your care provision

Hope your Grandma gets better sooon , Bouquet

  • My husband has a stoma and he was told it would be normal for him to have `leakage` from his back passage. He still gets discharge from there but it's like a clear gel like leakage he gets. He asked about this and they said it is always something that is going to be there but what you're grandmother is going through sounds a whole lot different as as others have posted here, I would get that checked out as soon as possible. Take Care.

    xx

  • Hi Ell23.

Just wanted to check in on you and see how you're doing.

  • Hey everyone sorry im at work and signals rubbish so not been able to get on properly ive only been getting a glimpse of people’s responses i really appreciate this aswel.

When i got home last night my grandma was alot better (she had been out with some of the family they seem to get the better part of the bargain)

But anyways she said shes not passed alot from her bottom only a little and there was no smell when i got home last night or when i woke up this morning, we are back at the hospital wednesday for ct scan before her treatment starts on wednesday and got to go see the stoma nurses there.

Does anyone think it there doesnt become alot of leakage from her bum i could wait till then? xx

  • Hi Ell23. Thanks for updating us all. Is she getting output into her bag now? She sounds to be improving but might still be worth giving her colorectal support nurse a ring tomorrow just to make sure?
