Blood identified, cancer?

Hi!
Im 22 years old and have experienced some interminent blood in my stool since november 2022 (on the surface of the stool and when wiping). I visited my GP which said that in my age it probably isnt anything serious. But I was not satisfied with his answer because I was also experiencing fatigue and abdominal pain. I had some abdominal pain some years ago and did a colonoscopy that couldnt find any cancer or polyp etc.

So I decided to visit another doctor and I took blood in stool test were 1 of 3 was positive (had blood in stool), but my calprotectin levels were normal so IBD will be pretty rare in my case. He also did an rectoscopy (checking just the rectum) where he couldnt see any fissures or hemmorhoids, but he could notice some blood just on the top of my rectum, but couldnt see where the blood is coming from. He decided to refer me to a colonoscopy.

So my question is, while almost IBD and hemmorhoids/fissure is ruled out, what can my issue be? Do you think it may be bowel cancer, or is it more possible to be a polyp that is bleeding?

  • There are various conditions of the bowel that can cause bleeding . Diverticulitis   , ulcerative colitis I think is another one that can bleed and depending on the location of inflammation sometimes Crohn’s disease . Polyps that are still benign can cause issues . I am no expert just what I have read and you would obviously need a Dr to go through it all thoroughly. However we encourage anyone with bleeding to  insist on the Drs finding the source of bleeding . Even although by far the vast majority are not due to cancer you want to know for your own health sake how to prevent it from happening.

I wish you well . You are doing the right thing . I have sons your age and it’s exactly what I would want them to do .

    Take care ,
