Blood clot

My mum has cancer of the rectum, a blood clot on her lung and COPD which is making it hard for her to breathe. She is on oxygen 24/7 to help her breathe. Once the blood clot has dispersed she will be able to breathe a lot better and go back to having oxygen a lot less. I have been giving her blood thinning injections for the last 7 weeks but we have been told it can take up to 3 months. Does anyone have any experience of this? She is getting down in the dumps that it is still there. She had radiotherapy 2 weeks ago and has had bleeding from behind since then. She doesn’t have any follow up appointments booked. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi  . I had a large clot in each lung after my operation. I was put on a tablet called apixaban/eliquis which is similar to warfarin but without all the blood checks and restrictions. I was told that the body either naturally disperses the clot or works around it and the tablets are to stop anymore forming. Due to the fact that I managed to get the clots while in hospital on the daily blood thinning injections, I have been told to stay on the tablets for life.

Does your mum have a colorectal support nurse that you can ring? There is normally a 6-8 week wait after radiotherapy as it continues working then a scan to see what effect the treatment has had before surgery

  • Thank you. Did you know when the clots had dispersed? She has got a number for the colonoscopy team that she first saw.

  • No and they didn’t check either! I asked them if there was any sign of them when I had my next colorectal check up scan and they said no x

  • That’s interesting. I’m glad they went. Thank you for your help x

    • Hi, my husband had blood clots on the lungs and had 3 months of the blood thinning jabs, then another 3 months of blood thinning tablets.  They didn't routinely scan him so can't say if they had dispersed after the three months, but at a scan after 6 months they had gone.  His lungs are still clear.  Hope your mum's breathing gets easier soon.  I found it ok to give the jabs in the top of the leg sometimes when the tummy was too sore.
  • That’s reassuring, thank you. Glad your husband is ok. X
