I feel like this is a silly Question, even though my stoma is going and my bag isn't fall. Can I still change it? My bag been on nearly 24 hours, I'm over thinking everything at the minute, with it being all new to me.

  • Hi

Personally I wouldn’t wait till the bag is full to change it, but it’s not a silly question at all, especially when this is so new for you. The fuller the bag, the heavier it is which can mean pulling on the skin and leakage or bursting. Sometimes my bag fills really quickly depending on what I’ve been eating and how loose the output is, but normally my personal choice is to change the bag whenever there is stuff in it. I prefer a flat empty-ish bag as much as possible as my skin is better when there zero or little output in the bag, and you can choose to change it as often as you want or are comfortable with. How are you feeling? Managing with some nice food now?

  • Mash and gravy was my go to food after my surgery-it was heaven! I’m sure you’re enjoying everything more than jelly at least!

  • Definitely, told my little girl yesterday that mummy is off jelly for life hahaha she was like but that's the best thing, I was like not when you have lived off of it for two weeks x

  • My husband gets this. Some days he gets nothing in his bag he starts to worry about that but then it rights itself and `blows like billyoo`Joy. He got that worried at one point he phoned his stoma nurse and just not long after speaking to her the damn thing started working againBlush. They can be temperamental at times.

  • I got my stoma in October and I change mine twice a day morning and bedtime have been very lucky no leakage and I find it’s a routine and I am in control off one thing ,When it was all new that was worst thing no control over anything!

  • I have had so many melt downs over it but I am getting there xxx

  • Hi Bigbird.
You’ve had a big operation, life changing surgery and left to deal with your diet when having a stoma. Being sent home and being told to eat jelly is really not professional. I know the NHS are amazing but it sounds as though you really had the worst experience so shows that there’s a large divide in standards. Thankfully you’ve got an amazing consultant which is the most important

With that in mind you are not melting down you’re frustrated at you treatment. And rightly so

You stamp your feet all you want

Hope you have a good day today xx

  • Through all this since I have been home which is a week tomorrow, I have had so much support from my aunt, my eldest daughter and even my Youngest daughter who is 6, has been such a good girl through all this, didn't realise how much this would change me, I'm getting there slowly today I am just having a lazy rest day as just can't get comfy for some reason,

I am so glad I came on this website when I did as I would of probably put myself in the nutty unit by now that's what I told my daughter which made us both laugh,

My son is coming over to stay tonight with his partner and my beautiful granddaughters can't wait for that Grin
