No longer able to have chemotherapy

My husband has aggressive bowel cancer that has spread rapidly from first symptoms in October to now. It is now in bowel, lymph nodes nearby and in chest near lung, stomach lining, adrenal, liver and affecting blood flow so his kidneys have started to die. Today I have been told the planned treatments will have to change due to rapid spread. They think that chemotherapy is unlikely to be a benefit and so he probably won’t have any. Does this mean we are on a downhill path to the end? It seems he is not going to have any treatment just pain relief and stoma. What prognosis can I expect? No appointment for two weeks and I need to have some idea. Thank you

  • Hi

So sorry to hear that . I am wondering if you might like to phone our helpline staff . The nurses could tell you more about prognosis but also support for yourself and your husband .

It has all moved very quickly and support it essential.

  • Hi

Normally a persons case goes to an MDT meeting to make these decisions. Can I asked if it was an oncologist you spoke to ?

  • Hi

It was simply a catch up with the key worker who is a specialist oncolgy nurse in the colerectal team. He is involved in all the discussions and my first contect for advice and updates. He rang because my husband was discharged from hospital on Saturday and he was catching up with all the updates about the cancer spread.

  •

I take it your oncologist still wants to meet with him ?

They are inclined to do that in person . We had a similar situation where my mum was very sick in hospital and the GI team very concerned about her tolerance of treatment. No two situations are the same but her oncologist felt she was ok to have treatment.

Might have been preparing you but still the opportunity to ask the oncologist more about it .
