Hi. Just wondering id anybody kn here suffered with hiccups after their bowel surgery. Hubby had bowel instruction and needed emergency surgery. All has gone well but he hss been in discomfort with hiccups constantly since coming round from op.
Any advice?
Smudge22 There’s some useful information in this old post but might be worth checking with the ward he was on or his colorectal support nurse? x
I had random hiccups post surgery. Has eased as weeks pass but still occurs occassionally.
I didn't try any remedies other than try to lightly surpress my stomach if i could catch in time (as painful on recently operated stomach).
if your hubby's is continuous, definitely raise with colorectal suppory team as am guessing that it's exhausting and painful.
Oh god YES! I had a tumour removed from my colon a few weeks back. For about 24 hrs I had hiccups that would last for a couple of hours at a time. Never knew they could be so annoying!!! Peppermint teas and peppermint oil really helped me.
not aure why they happened but went after a day or so.
hope that helps x
Hubby home and still got hiccups (4days) constantly. Been given a prescription for relief which has to be order in as no chemist has got it hope it works.
He has been given a prescription to collect when pharmacy has it in stock. Will definitely try the peppermint tea. Thanks
Hi. I didn’t have hiccups after surgery but I’ve had them all my life and have found many solutions. Some like drinking water from the wrong side of the glass upside down probably not a good choice some of the others I’ve tried. sucking on a lemon which definitely works but not recommended.
Have you tried Gripe Water. It’s safe for babies and children so it’s worth a try and I can’t imagine it would cause any problems after his operation. You don’t need a script they sell it in Tescos
Hope things settle
best wishes
Ann
Hi Smudge22,
Has your husband ever had his Magnesium level checked via blood test? I was wondering if low Magnesium could be contributing to hiccups.
