Hello, I just joined the group. My husband has colon cancer that has metastasised to his liver. He had successful surgery in his colon in June and started chemo in December. I have a question about the side effects. He is in the 3rd and pill free week of his first cycle and he has side effects now that are worse than when he was taking the pills. Is this ‘normal’ / ‘common’? These side effects are centred on his stomach and bowel movements. He constantly feels queasy but not nauseous and isn’t sick. His bowel movements are loose but he feels ‘stuffed’ up. His nurses don’t seem to be concerned by this (I don’t mean they don’t care) but it’s making him very depressed. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any tips for relieving his discomfort.
Hi MaryJay
My mum’s consultant told her that her off week would be potentially worse than her treatment weeks .
They most were for her . She took over the counter buscopan for what she described as colic type pain .
It certainly sounds as though he needs a chat with his consultant. Some adjustments really helped sort out the side effects for my mum. Allowed her to finish her course of treatment .
Our helpline staff would also be happy to chat it through .

Thank you so much! Your reply is so reassuring. Even if only one other person has had the same experience it makes it less frightening. Colic describes it perfectly. He will definitely have a word with his consultant to see if anything can be done. Thank you again for taking the time to reply x
Hi MaryJay,
Always worth keeping professionals aware but symptoms are quite common. Side effects can come at any time and not normally linear.
If you want to try some easy wins, I'd suggest trying ginger for queasy feeling and mint for stuffed feeling. You can do in any format - fresh, herbal tea, etc.
Thank you. I note your point about the side effects. It certainly seems to be a bit haphazard. Thank you too for the tip about the teas. I’ll certainly get some of those
