Terrified

I got diagnosed with rectal cancer on 30th November, and having surgery in January and it's a possibility that I could end up with a stoma bag depends on how low the tumor is.and fingers crossed I wont need chemo as it hasn't spread and they think they have caught it in time.

I am 48 and safe to say I  absolutely terrified of the surgery as never had any surgery through out my life. So worry about being put to sleep, I suffer with mental health to which doesn't make it any easier. Don't really talk much about how I'm feeling to my family especially my 3 children who are 26,24 and 6 year old.

My 6 year old knows mummy has to have an operation to remove lumps and bumps but think she is to young to be told that mummy has cancer. My older two know it all. But don't want to worry them on how I feel about it all.

I know it's ok not to be ok but I'm struggling even more so today after my pre op assessment

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . One thing for sure anaesthetists know how frightened people are of anaesthetics . Talk to them about it . They have helped so many people on this forum and before you know it you will be in recovery .
Sometimes it’s good to speak to people away from family so you have freedom to say how you really feel . This can also be done with helpline staff on 0808 808 0000 . Completely confidential and have eased a lot of people through this process . Macmillan has also teamed up with Bupa to offer six free counselling sessions .

Also have a chat with your GP . They can be very helpful in preparing you .

You are definitely not alone  and I am glad you have reached out .

    Take care ,

  • Hi Bigbird and welcome to the board. I felt just like you - I’d never been in hospital before but I was ‘pleasantly surprised’ by how painless it all was. The anaesthetist came to chat with me before surgery and explained exactly how it would all work. As usual they have to explain all the possibilities of things not going according to plan which I accept but then I remind myself that if you read all the side effects on a packet of paracetamol then you’d probably never take them!

I had a epidural which I was a little worried about but they spray the area with a numbing spray, you feel a tiny scratch no worse than giving blood and then nothing after that - the next thing I knew I was in recovery.

I’ve attached a link to a booklet about the op which has some good advice on things to pack - an extra long charging cable is a good one.

  • Hi Bigbird.
I felt exactly the same but I wanted that cancer in the bin more than the fear of the operation.
I had an Ileostomy and found it really no bother at all. I  joined the stoma support group here and had amazing support and tips. In no time I was flying abroad easy peasy.
Keep chatting here if it helps.
    Sending you a hug

  • I have never had an operation ever that's why I am more worried, but like I said I got alot to focus on and to be positive for

Thankyou for your kind words x

  • Hi there. I’d never had an op either.

The surgeon explained that I would be under all day as he’d book the theatre

I thought well as long as it takes I didn’t have to worry about it as I would be asleep.

    They will look after you.

Put yourself in their hands  it’s the only way to get that thing in the bin.
That’s the goal get rid of that and let the experts do it.

Then when you wake up they will have everything that you need for a speedy recovery

    Take care x
