Hi all... dad got to see his Consultant after pre assessment appointments and has decided to go ahead with surgery tomorrow. Everything just seems to be happening so quickly. This evening he's been struggling with the bowel prep solutions. I've encouraged him to take water & his pre op energy drinks & he's managed to finish the horrid stuff & 2 out of the 4 energy drinks in-between spending most of the eve in bathroom. We have to leave 6am ish to get to hospital for 7am.
I'm really worried that he's going to be so exhausted tomorrow and it will cause problems with the surgery. Anyone had similar experience and if so how did you cope? Thanks in advance.
Hi bluestar
I don’t think many people have a great sleep the night before surgery so he is in good company .
With regards to it affecting surgery I have never seen anything come through regarding that . The Anaesthetists are well aware of the impact this all has on them and frequently people report them being very reassuring and responsive to the anxiety that comes with this .
He is in good hands and will be well supported .
He will be safely in recovery before you know it . Just remember he may stay there for a while before returning to a ward so don’t let that delay concern you .
If he is taken in the afternoon it can be after tea before you hear anything .
I wish him and you every success tomorrow.

Hi ...
Well 9 hours waiting and then told , by a very disappointed Consultant, despite his best efforts there was no bed available for Dad post op. No choice therefore they had to cancel today. We weren't alone as the other 2 patients waiting were in the same position.
So now looking at possibility of Dec 16th which is not what dad wanted as everyone was pulling out the stops so he could be settling at home for Xmas.
Still, they are doing their best and I can't fault the Consultant.... he was a disappointed as Dad with the news.
So.... thanks everyone for your kind words and support.
Will.keep you posted.... bluestar
Oh I am so sorry.
That’s terrible and so stressful for you all and you’re being so understanding.
The hospital staff must be at their wits end with the bed shortages and staff shortages.
This must be so hard for you.
Thanks for keeping us updated
I’m sending you all a hug
Ann
We read this a lot unfortunately. Unless a HD bed is available they won’t proceed and unfortunately these beds can suddenly fill up by people like my mum who came in as an emergency and stayed in it for two weeks . You never think at the time that it probably cancelled someone’s surgery date . You really don’t . But when you read post like you have written you see it from the other side .
We need more beds for sure . I am so sorry for you as it’s so disappointing when you have them all ready and prepared and I m absolutely sure it’s a source of frustration for your dads team too . They want to get on with the job they are employed to do .
Send your dad my best wishes and we will all be on his team for the 16 th .
take care ,

The Consultant had tried so hard to shuffle things around for Dad. I could see in his face the sincerity & disappointment. On top of everything they are doing they should not be having this added pressure. 2 other people waiting with us were told the same (for them it was their 2nd cancellation) Phone calls today for me to try and sort things out for Dad.
Thanks again for all the support. It helps a lot to have people who understand, care and take time out when you've all been through, or are going through, difficult times yourselves x
