Neutrapenia

I’m halfway through my three month course of Folfox for Stage 4 bowel cancer. I’ve just been advised that I can’t have my chemo on Monday as scheduled because my neutrophils are too low. I have to wait a week to see if they come back up.

Obviously, I’m worried about the delay to my treatment and the effect it might have on the outcome. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

  • Mine was stopped 3 times in my weekly regime, so it is possible, (and added onto the end!) but each regime is different. The benefit of continuing has to be greater than the possible effects to your system is bloods. I will be 3 years clear come mid Dec. Take care, your team has your best interests at heart.

  • Hi

Totally understandable to be worried but my mum had chemotherapy over two years and particularly as we come into the winter months I would prepare for a delay or two . Even colds can knock treatment off a week or two . However they are very used to this and to be honest I thought it gave my mum a bit of a boost energy wise and she went back onto treatment just fine . Her cancer continued to shrink .

Hope your keeping nice and safe whilst it comes back up .

  • Hi Bebe Chin,

Unfortunately I think this is a fairly common problem. I had Folfox last year - prescribed 6 x fortnightly cycles. My neutrophils were low on a few occasions and treatment was delayed. It’s very frustrating I know, but you need to be well enough to have the chemo and it’s not safe to have with a low neutrophil count. I was given Accofil (Filgrastin) injections to self administer (after my pump was removed) for 5 days after each cycle to help stimulate the growth of white blood cells. I also had my Oxaliplatin reduced to 80% which helped enormously. Perhaps you could ask your team if it’s possible to do something similar?
