Smoothies

Hi!

Has anyone any ideas on what kind of smoothies you could make up for someone with cancer. I put it to Jay that because his appetite is a bit off just now if he thought he could drink these as a way of getting some protein into him. I know there's fruit ones and veggie ones you can do but with Jay having diabetes I would need to know what you could put in it that won't have a high sugar content. He is still eating his dinner at night but takes a couple of mouthfuls then leaves it doesn't even have a pudding used to have a pot of yogurt or rice. after dinner but doesn't want that just now. He'll eat one or two potatoes along with his dinner his request just now is for 3 potatoes where he used to have about 5 or 6. Our son is right into fitness and used to drink those protein shakes that smelt of `old socks` or `mouldy cheese` and Jay n I used to `gag` at the smell of them so they would be out. Is there somewhere on the site that would give advice on diet etc. Thanks

Vicky

  • Perhaps whizz up a banana, a tsp of peanut butter & almond milk, or plain yoghurt. You could add a few frozen berries, though not sure about their sugar content for diabetics.

  • Perhaps another idea would be to make blended soups.....Broccoli & Blue cheese is delicious.

  • you mention wanting to make protein smoothies. Most fruit ones will contain mainly carbohydrates (sugar). Eating potatoes only at night would also only be a source of carbs and sugar.

Best protein sources would be milk or yoghurt based shakes, eggs, seafood and chicken. Mariannes comment re broccoli and blue cheese (acquired taste maybe) would tick a lot of boxes.

just google foods high in protein

  • Yes, I agree with It sounds like your husband is off his food right now (which hopefully will come back in time,) but in the meantime, I think the way to go right now would be home made soups - rather than smoothies. Buy a chicken & simmer it with various root veg for an hour.....(You can blend, or leave whole,) then add some herby dumplings towards the end of cooking....delicious, nutritious, with lots of protein, & easier to eat than solids.

  • Yes! I never thought of that homemade soup. He is always a one for making that but unfortunately he's not really in the right frame of mind to do that just now. Round about this time of the year he usually makes a big pot of homemade soup and freezes some and that does us for a couple of days. As I said the kitchen has always been his domain and he loves cooking so this like everything else is down to me at present. All he will eat for lunch just now is cupa soups he'll have bowl of cereal in the mornings but will only eat so much of that. Eats a good bit but leaves some. I've started trying to make more fish and chicken for him I know they are a good source of protein etc. He likes bananas as well but he's not really wanting much of those either. Thanks for your comments.

  • Hi Vicky

I have protein powder in bags from Holland and Barrett-one chocolate flavoured, one vanilla. No smell of mouldy socks or old cheese and great to add when making a shake with milk, oat milk or almond milk. Or just adding to a yogurt, cereal etc. I also buy a bag of mixed veg soup mix at Asda as I can’t stand long enough to chop veg. 20 minutes with a stock cube and you’ve got a lovely pan of soup. Anything that’s nice and simple is good!

  • Thanks Sarah!  That sounds a really good idea. He loves making his own soup too but then that's out the window for now. He does all that chopping up the veg and adding things like leek and some broth mix using a chicken to make the stock with and cutting it up and putting it back through it. But what you've said sounds a good alternative I'll give that a go. Thanks.

  • Lots of great idea already. Could I also suggest you ask for an appointment with an oncology dietician - they can often tailor diets for particular situations and may have some supplements they could prescribe.
