Healthy foods during Folfox chemo

Hi

I'm on Folfox chemo again, for four cycles, hopefully to facilitate surgery re mets to liver. Just had first cycle (Tues.) not too bad so far - used to it, from last year. Prior to Chemo I changed my normal organic honey to manuka - following friendly, helpful advice on one of the chats on here - which I now can't find!  I'm now trying to find out if it's safe to actually eat Manuka honey, whilst on chemo as it's sometimes 'raw'. I've been happily including it in my diet as it's delicious and lovely on porridge, but a nurse in chemo said it may not be safe as it may be raw. There's nothing on the jar to indicate it's raw. Does anyone know the safest manuka to have, whilst on chemo please??

Any other advice of good foods to eat, on chemo, also gratefully received! I'm vegetarian (well, sometimes eat chicken/fish, but not often).

  • I honestly am not sure as I read somewhere you have to check with your oncologist. I only found that out after she completed chemo .

Our helpline staff might be able to advise . 0808 808 0000. Mum’s on it just now as she is not on treatment but I will be checking it out with her oncologist.

I can see the nurses point .

  • Hi Court

Thanks, as always, for your swift reply.

I hope things are going better for you and your mum, now that she's home. You've both had a really tough time.

  • Hi,

it was me who suggested Manuka Honey. It was my oncologist  mentioned it but was not advertising on behalf of the NHS. He just said he and the nurse used it as it helps your immune system and could help fight cancer cells.
I use the 740 MGO I thought it was £30 per jar but it’s was £60 a jar bye one get one free. I was charge £60 for two jars that’s why I thought it was £30 a jar lol.  Remember I’m no on chemo I wasn’t offered that as treatment.

  • That’s what my mum is currently using too . If she goes on chemo she can always stop but I did read an article on the benefits of stopping throat infections a while back. Whilst off chemo she is definitely going to use it .

  • Hi Court,

Yea I’m not on any treatment as yet I’ve been taking it after my first appointment with the oncologist who told me about the Manuka Honey. My next appointment is 25th November. My hackles May be up before I go in as don’t know what to expect this time. It’s roughly 3 months since my last Ct scan and first appointment.

  • Hi Faloola (Cath)

I remember chatting online with you, a while back. Yes, forgot you wern't on chemo. Think you were about to have a week of radiotherapy.

I've gone back to my normal organic honey, for now. Used it whilst on chemo last year, but hope to start Manuka again later, when no chemo

Hope your next appointment goes well.

    Very best wushes

  • Hi Nettie,

Good to hear from you. Yes I got 5 days radiotherapy but have since heard you really need it for 4-5 weeks to have any advantages from it! I have a Ct scan 25th at 14:10 then meet with oncologist at 16:10 so not sure if scan results will be with him for the appointment as only 2 hours between them. Will be interesting to see what he says this time. I’m considering requesting copies of minutes of all MDT meetings on me.

  • Hi Cath

Yes, requesting copies of MDT meetings is a cool idea. Last year, my Macmillan nurse gave me MDT pages to keep. It was her idea - said she shouldn't really, but just happened to have a 'spare copy'!!
