Homeless and Going Through Chemo

I was diagnosed with colon cancer and had an operation to remove my left colon a month ago. i have been homeless prior to my surgery and due to the chemo i am due to be housed and even though i am fit for discharge i haven't been discharged due to my current housing situation, my concern is that i was told chemo will render my immune system weak and will make me susceptible to diseases and other viruses. I wanted to find out how living in a shared environment could impact your health especially if you are sharing an environment with a complete stranger and how this could impact your health. What can i do if i am offered a shared environment as this is all new to me and i am worried how i will cope considering the fact that i may need family support especially from my children. Please advice thanks.

  • Hi ,

I think there would be some considerations the people sharing your property would have to take on board so you might want to get your oncologist to write to the housing department to discuss your housing needs .

Our helpline staff might be able to chat this through with you on 0808 808 0000. You might like to have a chat with them anyway as they also do grants in certain situations which you might find helpful .

Can I wish you every success in finding accommodation and with your chemotherapy .

    Take care

  • thanks so much for the support, it is a very difficult time for me as i have had to suspend my masters and very stressed with all of this. Very difficult time for my family. but i really appreciate your support thank you.

  • So sorry to hear that and sincerely hope you can that back on track .

It is such a stressful time . Macmillan has also teamed up with Bupa to offer six free counselling sessions if you feel that might be of assistance to you .

Hopefully the oncologist can give some guidance on your housing requirements.

Support is always available here . We are a friendly bunch . Ask whatever you like .

    Take special care ,
