Advice re rectal cancer treatment

Hi all, we’ve had a meeting with the oncologist this morning and my husband has been told that the ‘standard’ approach (he has one lymph node flagged up and no sign of reoccurrence in his rectum) is 6 weeks radio and 6 months chemo- I won’t lie this has knocked him as he thought it was all quite positive and he would only need treatment for a short time. He has point blank refused to go through the treatment after they reeled off all the possible side effects (pointing out he will definitely be infertile, very likely have erectile disfunction along with other problems). Now we always knew the ‘possible side effects’ but I tried to drum it into him that this isn’t a definite but after that convo all my previous attempts have came undone. He previously had TEMS surgery for a stage 1 rectal cancer but unfortunately 1st scan 6 month later shows some activity in a lymph node right next to the tumour site.

I’m slightly annoyed to be told it’s a standard approach rather than an individual approach, he’s only 36 and had a stage 1 rectal cancer so this is all suddenly spiralled so quickly.

My question is, does anyone have any recommendations of a specialist I could seek advice and an appointment with? We live in the North East UK so ideally a specialist not too far.
Thanks for reading.

  • Hi . I’m afraid I’m not as ‘north’ as you so can’t recommend anyone. Christie’s in Manchester is a centre of excellence but probably too far from you. Have you tried ringing the support desk on the number below and seeing if they can provide you with contact details for someone nearer you? Their number is under my name

Hope you manage to get things sorted - I know you’d been having a lot of conversations with your hubby and I’m sorry to hear that this appointment has undone all your hard work

    Take care

  • Thanks Karen, I have contacted the Christie centre and they are happy to see him with a referral so just waiting on that. Praying someone is willing to try him on a shorter treatment plan x

  • Oh that’s good news . Fingers crossed that they have another suggestion for treatment x
