A family member got diagnosed at stage 4 with rectal cancer that has spread to his liver 2 years ago. They have been receiving chemo without a break and it has managed to keep the cancer stable. I think they might be planning an operation but I can’t really ask them too much as they will get upset.
does anyone have any experience of having a break from chemo and what might happen?
Hi Eyoung
Sorry to hear that . I see it’s difficult to ask . If chemo is being stopped in preparation for surgery this is normal. My understanding they like around six clear weeks before operating . My mum ended up around eight weeks by the time scanning , multi disciplinary teams etc had been consulted . However I expect a small amount of regrowth occurred in that timeframe but not enough to derail surgery and I think they have a good idea of their surgical margins .
Hope that helps .
