Recent APR and freaked out by anal wound

Hi everyone,

I had a low rectal cancer and as a result ended up having an abdominoperineal resection. It was only a week ago. I’m now home and just seen the anal wound for the first time.

Hoping someone else has had a similar thing and can advise on how the wound changes over time. At the moment mine seems to stick out quite a lot, like a pair of lips in between my bum cheeks… is this normal and over time does it recede and do I get a bum crack back?

Bit freaked out to be honest, so if anyone has experience of this it’d be great to hear.

Many thanks

Helen

  • Is your wound because you now have a,"barbie bum" or just from the operation.?

You will get different people popping up on here depending on which it is..mine is a "barbie bum"and you can read my history if you click on my name.

    All the best

  • Hi Kath,

Not heard that term, but yes it is a “barbie bum”  that I now have. Although in it’s current state it’s not exactly that smooth, lol

I only had the surgery last Wed, so I know it’s early days. I wasn’t expecting it to stick out though… is that just swelling and does it end up just going flat and looking like a normal scar between your cheeks?

    Many thanks

  • Hi Helen

I hope you’re improving. I must say you’re out and about really quickly. Well done. I couldn’t of got a mirror anywhere near my rear end.
Kath every time you pop up with your barbie bum it cracks me up that’s not literally as I have not got a barbie bum.
I didn’t have a clue what it meant to begin with then when I worked it out …. You really make me smile.
    Have a good day.

  • Thanks Artsie.I think someone else on here called it that and it has stuck with me as a perfect description.not as neat as hers unfortunately

  • Hi helen. It probably depends on the op.I had a complete.panproctocolectomy as I had a history of U C as well as the cancer.you are probably best asking your team about the outcome as everyone is going to vary .

  • Just a quick update in case anyone else on here in a similar situation and finds this thread… I had the follow up with the consultant last Friday and apparently it reduces to just a line eventually. It’s just really swollen at the moment. To be honest even since writing my first message it’s already much smaller and less freaky! Not quite barbie doll standards yet, but getting there, lol

  • Kath I’ve seen it in medical terminology. I can’t remember where I read it

it must been an American report somewhere  but yes it was definitely a

    BARBIE BUTT

So you’ve translated it. Still makes me smile I keep thinking of my daughters old Barbies.
