Just wondering if anyone manages to visit public places when on chemo. I don't go anywhere as I'm worried I'll get a virus or something. I don't want to spend any more time in hospital than is necessary. I'm not Neutropenic either. Thanks.
Hi DadPool40,
I have recently completed 12 cycles of Folfox chemo over six months. I was determined to try and carry on with as normal a life as possible while on chemo. Obviously being aware of Covid and my lowered immune system I have been as careful as possible, however I have visited pubs, restaurants, and numerous rugby stadiums on a weekly basis over the last six months.
My only scare was a visit to A&E at the behest of the Chemo treatment centre with a high temperature. An unspecified infection was diagnosed, which responded to a week’s dose of antibiotics.
I may have been lucky, my partner caught Covid during my treatment, but I tested negative on numerous occasions. I will add that I have no underlying health conditions that, chemo aside, would warrant me staying away from public places.
It is I suppose down to your own risk assesment of each situation.
Hi - I had 5 mths treatment of Chemo (Tabs only,) back in 2020, However, this was during lockdown - so I didn't venture far. This treatment didn't effect me badly back then. I think that it I was having it right now, I would just continue with life as normal - though probably meet/ eat with friends outside whenever possible - as I still do today.
Thank you. That's really helpful. I too had any unknown infection which I took 7 days of antibiotics for but no idea where I got it. I'm very careful. I'm bordering on OCD washing my hands constantly using alcohol gel. Even in my own home. I don't want to go back to hospital again for another infection. My nurse also told me that if you are not Neutropenic, your immune system is the same as everyone else's pretty much. Hope that's true. Thanks for replying.
Hi luckily my chemo was before covid.but I was told to carry on pretty much as normal, just being aware of people with viruses etc.I did tend to eat outside cafes etc if possible and keep away from folk with obvious coughs and colds.
Best wishes for your treatment
Kath
