Very distressed, confused and in need of perspective

Hello all, woman in her early thirties here. I started having loose yellowish bowel movements a couple of months ago after withdrawing off some psychiatric meds. It seemed to level out but came back terribly with nausea, exhaustion, gas and cramping. Very noisy bowel. Sometimes unable to sleep because of it. Losing weight despite trying to eat normally. Pain in my lower back. This has been going on for varying degrees for at least five weeks.

Went to my GP a number of times. They examined my abdomen and ran full blood count (twice) and stool tests, not FIT but calprotectin. I've also had a pelvic ultrasound. These all came back normal. I had a clear FIT test about nine months ago because of rectal bleeding. They say they will not refer me for endoscopy unless I trial amitriptyline for IBS for a month, I can't say I like that idea on top of my existing meds.

I've since gone back on my psychiatric medication and seen a small improvement, I am going to the toilet more like once per day. But I am honestly exhausted and terrified and worried I'm being palmed off as 'young' or 'anxious'. My stools are still looser than normal and somewhat yellow. The nausea is much less but still intermittent.

I do have severe anxiety, but it has never manifested this extremely before. I understand it may be due to my recent medication withdrawal but I am struggling to hold things in perspective. My distress is extreme.

Any help or reassurance greatly appreciated, I feel very lonely with this.

Thank you for reading. x

  • Hi

Welcome to the forum . I have been here a long time and certainly not seen too many comments concerning yellow colourings .

However you mentioned that you had rectal bleeding at some point and our guidance here is that all bleeding needs to be thoroughly investigated to find the cause . Only one in ten cases of bleeding are cancer related but it’s helpful for people to know how to treat other conditions that affect their health . That’s quite often done by a colonoscopy.

Anxiety is a tough health issue and it can affect your digestive system as you are so aware of . I am glad you are getting some help with that and things are easing for you .

We are very clear on this forum that people with psychiatric illnesses can absolutely have other health issues and we respect that and separate the two . It can be more difficult for a GP when treating one condition feels some aspect are attributed to medication or anxiety and they have the more difficult job of separating where the line is and what is impacting the situation . However if you feel you need further investigation then keep vigilant and return to your GP .

To be fair it sounds as though they are trying to find out what is impacting your health .

Our helpline staff would be more than happy to chat this through with you . 0808 808 0000. It’s not always easy to be heard but worth getting thoroughly checked .

    Take care ,
