So we have met with the Liver Team at the Royal London this morning and Tony has been booked in for a liver resection on 18th July..they confirmed that there is only one solitary lesion and that they will only need to remove 10% of the liver and are hopeful for clear margins..obviously its going to be major surgery so any of you lovely people can offer tips on recovery and managing afterwards as Tony is worried a bit that he only had the bowel resection in November...

  • Hi

    Sounds very positive clinically .

My mum has had two liver resections . Four wedge ones to be exact and a combined bowel resection . There was very little impact on her liver as it was a small volume . She recovered quite quickly and was sea kayaking six weeks later .  The liver regenerates quite quickly .She was in high dependency for a few days and got the best of care before going onto a surgical ward . As she had a combined resection she was there for a further week but mainly due to the bowel .
The second one was removing 73% of her liver and obviously had a bigger impact on her recovery which we were warned about due to the volume being removed . However what my mum did say which might encourage your husband she found it easier as she was not having to deal with her bowel restarting up . From that aspect she felt it was a better recovery .  They do like to get them function independently as soon as possible . The second resection her wound came across the front along her bra line and healed well .
Similar to bowel surgery she was careful coming from a lying to a standing position etc .

Pain relief was an epidural initially. Then a morphine pump which was not too great for her as she is quite sensitive to it but was quickly brought down to other meds anyway .

That’s as much as I remember and your husband would probably have a quicker recovery given the volume and a single resection .

    take care ,

    Court

PS I though my mum looked sore and I do remember at this point thinking she was gutted like a fish . It stayed with me for years until one day she told me she has no memories of this part !! Something to bear in mind .
