Back pain following bowel surgery

Hi everyone, my husband had emergency bowel surgery last Wednesday (today is Sunday) following a bowel obstruction which turned out to be cancer. Awaiting a full body CT scan and results of biopsy on the tumour next week. Lower half CT scan before surgery showed isolated area in lower left end of large colon. This was removed along with nearby lymph nodes as a precautionary measure, and a stoma created. He has been experiencing lower back pain since surgery, with a full blown excruciating spasm on Friday morning. Doctor was called, single dose diazepam given, along with his existing morphine. He has had occasional back pain prior to this, but I just wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience. I suffer from long term anxiety, and I'm trying very hard to be supportive and upbeat for my husband. From what I can gather the doctor in the hospital didn't seem to be worried. Thanks everyone. Best wishes to you all.

  • Hi  and welcome to the board. That must have come as a huge shock to you both. I initially had back ache after surgery but put it down to having been laid on a hard operating table for a few hours and it wore off after a couple of days. It may be due to everything inside starting to repair and settle down but I think you’ll have to put your trust in the doctors. Hopefully the scan and biopsy will be ok but pleaee keep us posted?

There's also a stoma support board that you might find helpful?

  • Hi Wursty

I had excruciating back pain following surgery which required pain-killing injections.  The consultant said that during my particular op (keyhole LAR) the body was twisted into some very unnatural positions and held there for a considerable time which probably accounted for the pain.  It improved once I was up and moving about.

I hope that things improve soon for your husband too and that you get some positive news after the CT scan and biopsy results.

    All the best.

  • Thank you so much BlueBlue! I'm so grateful that you took the time to get back to me! I hope you are doing well now! Xx
