So 6 weeks post op to remove tumour from rectum, the staging is  T4N1B. Have been offered chemo over 6 months. Oxaliplatin intravenous every 21 days for 8 cycles and capecitabine twice daily for 14 days for 8 cycles. This will start in about 3 weeks.                         I’m still feeling pressure and dull ache in my bum. Can’t wait for that to go. They don’t seem to know why I’ve got this, just hope it’s stopped hurting by the time I’ve got to sit for my chemo.
I’ve got use to my stoma bag now. I did have an accident when I slept the hole night through and it come away and leaked in my bed! Not happy. So I set an alarm to wake me just incase I don’t wake half way through the night.  I know I’ve got this! I’m keeping positive, just have to get past this aching bum and to the next stage.

  • Hi Lett66

Oh I feel for you with the mattress situation. I’m still cross ten months on. New mattress cost me an arm and a leg. I didn’t protect it well enough. So frustrating

Ive found by not eating after six my output is less and I can have a fair night. It’s all about managing and learning how our stoma’s work. We all seem to be different and what works for one doesn’t always fit the next

I think chemo may cause some changes however I didn’t have that so can’t advice but lots here have and will help if you need it

I had to sleep on my back had no choice this didn’t help. You’re still early in recovery but you seem to be really doing well.
I hope that the aching sorts it’s self soon. Literally a pain in the bum is really horrible. I had pressure there at times like before my operation almost like I needed to go to the toilet. I have an ileostomy so that’s really not going to happen. A little mucus at times but nothing to notice.
If it helps keep talking here

  • Feel for you. My advice is to get two cushions from occy health to sit on, also get some decent pain relief from Dr.

  • Hi Artsie Ann

    Thanks for your reply.

    • I have a ileostomy too. But still get pressure down there and mucus quite a few times a day. Have to wear a liner incase.
I usually have dinner around 530-630 so maybe I should change it but I do get hungry if I eat any earlier which defeats the object really.

  • Hi Lexi Rose

    thanks for your reply.

because the pain is in my buttocks not sure the cushions would help. I lie in my side on a recliner so as not to sit on my bum but obviously can’t do that 24/7. My oncologist said to take codine but I know that can constipate you so I don’t need my ileostomy to block. But I have started taking 1 co codamol 30/500g with 1 paracetamol once a day for relief when I can’t take pain anymore. Not sure what else I can take

  • Hi.
I just wondered if the pain is muscular then maybe the physio could give you some gentle exercises Im not sure what but I was given a sheet of exercises to do when I got home. They did help mine were mainly pelvic floor. It may be worth asking your physio

I was on hefty pain meds for quite a while my GP was supportive in that regard

Hope you have a good day today

  • After my operation in December 21 I now fold up a Bath Towel to lay on  just in case my Stoma Bag Leaks during the night even in this Heat safe the sheets and the Mattress it does work.

also with my diet I now eat little and often this works well with the Stoma nothing to Heavy.

    Everyone stay safe and strong.

  • Thanks Artsie.
I think I am in more pain today as I had to have a pessary inserted yesterday for a prolapsed bladder.
Pelvic floor exercises unfortunately didn’t work for  that but I will give it a try. I’ve just spoken to my colorectal nurse and she said to take 2 co codamol and see how that goes. The pain has got worse since this but I still had the constant dull ache from after the op. I’ve yet to see my surgeon and have raised this with the nurse.

  • Hi micksavvery,

    thanks for your reply.
I did actually have a bath towel folded under me in the bed when it happened so it did save a lot but still went through. I’ve still got one in place and another folded under the sheet and mattress protector, just in case.
I will have to try that. Little and often sounds better and makes sense rather than a dinner in the evening. I suppose it’s early days and trial and error. Thank you

  • Hi

Can I suggest puppy pads? Towels are not really much good in my experience, but a puppy training pad is slim, light and remarkably absorbent! I have 2 stomas and find them a godsend.
