Reversal

Hi, I have had bowel cancer but was fortunate enough to have it successfully removed via surgery. I have a stoma which has caused me no problems, so had decided not to have the reversal op as I had read some horror stories online regarding issues after the op. I now have developed a parastatal hernia so my consultant has advised strongly in favour of the op, but I’m now really worried about how successful or otherwise it might be! Any advice?

  • Hi . It’s a difficult one to answer as they’ll be people with no problems and people who wish they’d kept the stoma. You could ask the consultant how low down your tumour was and how much you have left? There is a conditions called LARS - low anterior resection syndrome - whereby people can have a lot of problems with diarrhoea, clustering, urgency etc. but it’s very hard to predict.
I had my reversal in 2017 and lead a normal life although certain foods will trigger an evening of toilet visits eg. salad! so I often take an immodium. My surgeon said I would never go back to ‘normal’ but would get used to a new normal and evenings tend to be my toilet time. Have a look at some of the posts on this new board that’s been set up and see if it helps?
