Hi,
Today is my 4th day home after surgery & on & off for the best part of the day I’ve been having the urge to sit on the toilet which is impossible as those parts of my body ain’t there anymore.
I’ve heard about this thing Phantom Rectum, doe anyone else suffer with it? & more importantly, any tips on how to deal with it?
Best Wishes,
JBJ
Hi JBJ. Yes this is quite normal and you might find out that you pass little bits of poo or mucus plugs too. The bowel continues to produce mucus to help the stools through even though they are being diverted. If you have a loop Ileostomy/colostomy then you might find that a bit of your stoma output finds it’s way into the ‘loop’ bit and then through your bowel and out the normal way. Just sit on the toilet until the urge passes - you could bear down very gently but don’t try and force anything out.
You could also post this on the Ileostomy, Colostomy and Stoma support board

Hope your recovery is going well?
