Starting my chemo radiology treatment monday .Feeling quite anxious has to what is to come

  • Do you know which chemo.?
Its always daunting the first time.  They will take good care of you and it will get easier ( as in less daunting )

    good luck.

  • Hi . You’re taking the first steps to getting rid of this tumour. Is there anything in particular that you’re worried about? I know the term ‘chemo’ can be scary but it is quite a low dosage that is taken to enhance the effects of the radiotherapy so most people find that side if it pretty tolerable

    Take care

  • Hi Coops, sorry to hear about your diagnosis.   My husband had similar treatment and its generally do-able, especially to begin with.    Recommend having anti-sickness and anti-diarrhoea pills, along with a good moisturiser for the skin where you are getting the RT.  My husband was supplied with all these by the hospital when he was being treated (we are Scottish), although he didn't need the anti-sickness pills.  Make sure you take the chemo tablets when they recommend - usually that is immediately after food.  Don't wait  or take on an empty stomach, or they will go straight through your system.  Other things that may help are a non-perfumed shower gel/soap -  although that depends on the areas getting RT.    It can help to keep your moisturiser in the fridge if you need a more cooling treatment.  His main side effect (apart from diarrhoea) was cumulative tiredness, which peaked a week or 2 after the RT finished.  His white cell count also dropped towards the end of treatment, but the hospital didn't think it was bad enought to treat.  A healthy diet with lots of protein and veg helps. After the first week or two after treatment started, he needed to sleep when he got home from the hospital, and the amount of sleep he needed increased week on week.  if you are driving yourselft to appointments, you need to take the tiredness into account, especially in the later weeks of treatment and towards the end of the week.   Hope that helps.  x

  • What’s the time between first set of tablets and then the second lot on the same day

  • Oncology should have advised, but my husband took them immediately after breakfast and dinner in the evening.

  • Optimum is 12hrs apart. But more important is with food so 7am/7pm or whenever you would usually eat brekkie and dinner
