Any help with a liver cancer diagnosis with cirrhosis

Hello, I’m new on here, my husband was diagnosed with stage four cancer in February, had two operations to remove the bowel cancer, the first one being keyhole was not successful so he then had further surgery after an infection set in resulting in him having a stoma, he spent 6 weeks in hospital but after having an MRI scan he has five Mets on his liver and also been told he has cirrhosis and surgery on the liver is not possible, the oncologist said on his notes he denies having had large quantities of alcohol or knows nothing about any liver disease he might have had and he truly doesn’t and has never drank much in his whole life, he’s not sure if he’s suitable for chemotherapy and has told him he now has to consider palliative care, I’m just finding this so hard, he just seems to have no empathy or hope for my husband, he feels well at the moment and is enjoying his food, he’s just started driving again and everyone says how well he looks, but I just fear that hearing what this oncologist said he will now give up and go downhill quickly, all we wanted was hope that he can live a little longer and enjoy a few things, I’ve heard that you can live a few years on chemotherapy and palliative care but the way the oncologist is talking he doesn’t have long left at all, any advice would be greatly appreciated

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your husband . Such a difficult situation . My understanding is you can get cirrhosis of the liver due to non alcohol related reasons . That does not need to be justified by him . It’s just a fact .

Your husband is entitled to a second opinion . It might be worthwhile asking a liver specialist to have a look at his scans to see their opinion too or another oncologist.
Our helpline staff can help  guide you through this .0808 808 0000.

Obviously hard on the internet to know what the drs are seeing on the relative scans but it can be very helpful to find out if another clinician with the relevant experience would have other opinions for him .

    Take care ,

  • Hi Gina girl

liver cirrhosis can be caused by a high carb high fat diet  eventually fatty liver disease can become cirrhosis however the best way to determine the cause is via your husbands liver function tests  the ratio of ALT and AST determines the cause of cirrhosis

    ALT > AST = diet

    AST > ALT = alcohol

his GGT could also be a give away as that is usually pretty raised with high alcohol intake

have you seen his blood results ? Ask for a copy of his LFTs

Hope that helps  determine the cause and give Hope for further options
