Had my op on fri 1st April. All went well. Mostly out of it on the Saturday, the catheter and local anaesthetic line removed Sunday and out of bed for a while. Eating small amounts but not much appetite. Was coming home on Wednesday but vomiting started. Had ct scan, bloods, put on fluids. Tube put down nose into stomach. Never felt so ill in my life. No food for 3 days. Tube removed sat afternoon and told I could eat again. Really couldn't face food. Stoma just producing green water. Started getting appetite back on Wednesday 13th, but stoma stopped. No output in 24hrs. Had catheter put into stoma overnight and back on clear fluids only. Much improved on Thursday and stoma seems to be behaving. Told I can go home today Fri 15th, just waiting on blood results.

On the plus side, I am managing well with the bag changes.

Now just praying the results come back with no spread and that I dont need chemo. Xx

  • Well great news you are on the mend after a couple of false starts, and now waiting to go home how great is that

  • Hi  and good to hear that the tumour has been removed. Ileus is a common occurrence after surgery - the bowel is a bit of a diva and does not like being manhandled as you have found out. I’ve heard the gastric tube down the nose is very unpleasant - I was lucky enough to get away with nil by mouth for a few days, then fluid only etc. - but good to hear that it seems to have done the trick.

Hope the bloods are clear and you are able to get home - there’s nothing like your own bed and some peace and quiet. Stick to a low residue diet for a few days and build up your appetite gradually and I’m sure you’ll start to feel better soon

    Take care

  • Hi Debbie,

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in January and went in to have part of my bowel removed where the tumor was on the 1st of March, the first few wks of having the op can be tuff  as a few ppl have said the bowel really doesn't like to played about with , all the movement and noises I experienced going on in my tummy and still get it now is very strange ,.

Nearly 7wks later and I am feelin more or less back to normal now ,

Unfortunately 7 out of the 30 odd lymph nodes they removed had traces of cancer so I have got to have chemotherapy, im still looking on the positive side thats not many and this is just the last part of the treatment, im.meating the oncology team this wk to find out what the plan is ,

I have found out of all of this the biggest part if recovering is bein positive and take every day as it comes and you will get there

I am very lucky to have such a good support network of amazing family n friends,

    Keep smiling
