I had my operation on 9th March and all went well. Unfortunately on 20th March I had a bleed from the wound in rectum. The wound did clear within about 4 days. Unfortunately I have incurred another wound which is discharging. Have had a swab and today it has been confirmed no infection. My question is if anyone knows how long it takes for wound to heal and stop discharging, the reason being they will not start chemotherapy until I am fully healed and I just went to progress with my journey - I don’t have much patience I’m afraid.
When still in hospital after my op ( 2 weeks in total because I had an ileus ) they investigated all ways to check for infection(because of the leakage)
Ultrasound,ct scan, camera through the stoma.nothing was found. So I just had to wait it out.annoying but it did heal

Thankyou for replying. I actually did post again. On 28th April had appointment with oncologist who advised if not healed by five weeks from that date would not be given chemotherapy. I don’t know why he didn’t explain and I was taken aback to ask why. I was quite upset at this. Felt that I should have opted for wait and see, but can’t look back. Can only hope that it clears as they did find cancer in two lymph nodes.
Hope your husband clears soon too as does drive you mad constantly leaking.
Hi Pez2. I had been readmitted to hospital with large bi-lateral pulmonary embolisms and was wheeled down to my appointment with the oncologist. She told me I was in no fit state to start chemo but as the 2 infected lymph nodes were both close to the tumour then she wouldn’t be unduly worried if I didn’t get round to chemo.
I believe they generally like to start chemo within 8 weeks of your operation. I met with the oncologist again 3 months after my op and she said I could have chemo if I wanted it so I eventually started it 4 months after my original operation.
Lymph nodes run in a sort of chain formation so you could ask if the 2 removed were close to the tumour? Could you ask for a telephone appointment with the oncologist and ask what difference having the chemo would make?
Take care
Karen x
Thank you for your reply. From my operation on 9th March, they have given me 3 months to heal, but don’t understand why like yourself you commenced 4 months later. I haven’t had the appointment but my surgeon will see me about a week before they have scheduled me to start chemotherapy to see if I can go ahead.
Thanks for replying. I remember you telling me, I asked again when I saw them last week and for some reason my surgeon doesn’t believe in packing or dressings. I even asked could they not put a stitch in but they said no. Do you know why you can’t have chemotherapy once you pass 12 weeks from operation? I will ask if not when I see stoma nurse on Friday.
