My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019, had surgery to remove part of his colon but we learnt at the beginning of 2020 that it had spread to his liver. 7 rounds of FOLFOX followed by liver resection to remove 4 tumours. After recovery he was given 4 cycles of CAPOX. During the FOLFOX and CAPOX chemo he had a range of side effects, some were worse than others, but during all of this he was cheerful and active, we normally walk about 5 miles a day and he has barely missed one day apart from when he was in hospital and a couple of days afterwards. His appetite has generally been very good apart from a few 'off days'. Following the last cycle of CAPOX he was looking forward to getting back to normal, but began to feel increasingly unwell. He still had diarrhoea (which he had on and off all through the CAPOX treatment) but this got much worse to the point where he soiled the bed. He developed stomach pains and much and 2 days after the end of the CAPOX he started vomiting and shivering. He was admitted to hospital, they kept him for 5 days as he had border-line neutropenia. Discharged on Thursday with a supply of incontinence pads but no treatment and no advice. I am really worried about him, having come through all this treatment with good morale he is just not himself at all. Although he is eating a little better his energy levels are very low, he still has diarrhoea and seems very low. I don't know if I am over-reacting, but he just seems so different from how he was during treatment. Has anyone else been affected like this, or have you any advice on how long the after effects might last?
Hi . What a shame that your hubby had been doing so well then was suddenly floored by his last one. I can imagine it was frightening for him and then a 5 day in hospital to deal with. I had a couple of setbacks during my treatment and sometimes I just felt that I was never going to get back to normal and life just didn’t feel fair at times. It’s very disheartening to have something like this happen especially when the end of treatment was in sight.
It might be worth seeing if his GP will have a chat with him and maybe do bloods to check everything’s ok. In the meantime you might like to give the nurses on here a ring for a chat? They’re available 7 days a week from 8-8 on 0808 808 00 00
Hope he starts to pick up again soon
Take care

Hi Karen. Thanks for your encouraging words, I will try ringing the nurses and see what they say. I just wanted to know if anyone else had experienced feeling much worse after chemo had ended than they did during treatment? You are right, it doesn't seem fair!
