Hi All,
After what seemed like forever, I had my reversal last Oct (2021). Once home (after 6 days in hospital) I felt more uncomfortable and incorrectly assuming that my recovery would be similar after my LAR. I have now accepted that this is a longer recovery than before. I was only able to start walking short distances - say 15 mins mid January at a slow pace. I am now able to walk 20 mins at a more brisk speed and relatively comfortable and pain free. I have also continued with daily core-4 exercises but am feeling very out of shape. I have largely refrained from activities such as lifting/ hovering/cleaning etc for most of this recovery.
Having spoken to the nurses and Occ Health (via work referral) the last few weeks, I have been told that it will be a slow process for recovery and not to push through the pain barrier. I am keen to get out on the bike again but also cautious of not going out too soon.
So it is 16 weeks on and I still have what I describe as discomfort ( a bit like light numbness) around my rectum/lower back, this is more noticeable if for example I've washed the dishes or done a bit of light hoovering.
Are there others who have had similar experience and if so does this sensation/discomfort reduce overtime as the healing process continues or is this another part of managing with the 'new norm'?
Hi
Sounds as though you are actually doing really well considering how extensive surgery is and not to be underestimated. I think taking it slowly is a good idea as my mum ended up with a rather large stoma .
I have no direct experience but going to pop this back to the top of the thread and tag in Kareno62 to see if they have any experience in this area.
But from what I read here it actually sounds as though you are making steady progress and that leads to good long term outcomes .
You will get back on your bike and make up for the lost time . It will be a great celebration when it comes .
Take care ,

Hi . If I’m honest I found my reversal to be a much smaller operation than my LAR and I was recovering really well until I had another anastomotic leak. The only time I felt any discomfort was after my LAR and I got a dull ache at the bottom of my spine after walking - the nurse said this was a sign that I had overdone it and to exercise alternate days instead.
Have you had any bloods done at your doctors? Mine were all over the place and I ended up on potassium supplements and vitamin D. How are your bowels? I found that everything used to pass through quite quickly and I wonder if your stools need ‘slowing down’ a bit to allow your body to absorb all the nutrients?
Just a couple of thoughts and I really hope things start to improve for you shortly
Take care
