Hi Everyone. My wife had her colostomy surgery last Tuesday and is now back home recovering. Unfortunately she is in a lot of pain and I am looking for any suggestions for pain management etc.
So does anyone have any answers and/or suggestions re the following:-
She is only passing small hard poo pellets into her stoma so, is this normal ?
Would a hot water bottle for her bottom help with her pain?
How long will she suffer the current high levels of pain?
What pain management / medications helped?
What foodstuffs did people find the most suitable?
Thanks
Hi Mr Mac,
I am pretty new to the forum, but from the little I know I'd say passing hard pellets is not right. Is she drinking enough water? This was part of my husband's problem which led to a blockage. We kept to soft foods after his operation. You certainly need to get some pain medication, and if things don't improve, get help. My husband had trouble with the stoma working, and went back to hospital for help. I personally think hubby was pushed out too quickly. It sounds as if your wife was. Don't suffer in silence.
Hi . If her operation was only recent then please ring the ward that she was on for help? No she shouldn’t be passing hard pellets and needs to keep her fluid intake up especially when some painkillers (like codeine) can cause constipation. It may help to follow a low residue diet initially but check with her medical team first?

Please reach out for help as she needs to get on top of the pain and be able to eat light meals to help her recovery
Take care

I've been trying to get through to the Cancer nurse and the stoma nurse both yesterday and this morning as there's also a really bad smell coming from where she had the surgery. They said they will get back but up until now they still haven't . I have since phoned to speak to a district nurse and they said that she wasn't in their system and that the hospital should have organised that when she was discharged . They said I will need to get a doctor out first to check if she needs anti biotics and then they will come out.
Thanks for getting back to me xx
Yes I totally agree. I've been trying to get through to the Cancer nurse and the stoma nurse both yesterday and this morning as there's also a really bad smell coming from where she had the surgery. It was the usual answering machine which said they will get back but up until now they still haven't . I have since phoned to speak to a district nurse and they said that she wasn't in their system and that the hospital should have organised that when she was discharged . They said I will need to get a doctor out first to check if she needs anti biotics and then they will come out.
Thanks for replying
Hi Karen. I had been trying to get through to the Cancer nurse and the stoma nurse both yesterday and this morning as there's also a really bad smell coming from where she had the surgery. It was the usual answering machine which said they will get back but up until now they still haven't . I have since phoned to speak to a district nurse and they said that she wasn't in their system and that the hospital should have organised that when she was discharged .The GP came out and said she had an infection and has prescribed strong antibiotics. Her temperature has also went up so he said if it gets any worse to get back in touch right away.
