Hi all,

I have recently been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and am due my Op on 18th Feb. I have been told what may happen but I am more scared of this than i was of the IRA when i was in the forces. I am 67 years old and a tad over weight but out walking 2-4 miles a day now. Tyhey say that it may be 96% chance of clearing it all  but I am still concerned about a Stoma, short or long term. Is recovery these days as quick as they state? I have been advised that I may be driving in 2-4 weeks? and that I will be discharged in 4-5 days from the Op/? Can anyone advise me on the way forward that i can expect please.

Thanks in advance

Thank you I will take a look at the support group just to pre arm myself.

  • There’s masses of info there.

Don’t worry about it until it happens is my mantra now

Take care, treat yourself to something you enjoy

  • Morning Bink

I had a laproscopic LAR 24/0118 - went in early that day, operation in morning,  woke up to find a stoma had not been necessary,  it's often an 'on the day, see what we find' decision.   Left hospital on the Saturday - recovery is that quick. Four years ago today I struggled to the car and managed to get into a local restaurant for lunch; Feb 1st is the birthday of our twin sons.  Yet 3 weeks later I drove the car with my wife, son & his g/f, walked the 1klm across Stanley park and watched Liverpool destroy West Ham.  By the end of March my wife & I went on a 3 day walking break in the Lakes.  Within a year we'd travelled to S/E Asia and a bucket list trip to S. America & Antarctica.

Of course I wish it had never happened,  but it did.  It was nowhere near as bad as I expected.   Believe me I know I was lucky, lucky to have diagnosed early and lucky to have benefited from the fantastic care at the Liverpool Royal.   I cannot thank them enough, because thanks to them I've seen our beloved reds become European,  World &, best of all, Prem champions.

I really hope it all goes well for you - keep us all posted.

YNWA  - hope Mo & Sadio come home safely

    Hi Mike,

thanks for the heads up but I guess age can be a factor in recovery so I’m not expecting miracles. They have told me it’s early cancer so I guess they have caught it early. They certainly are not messing about getting me in. Problem is it’s low in the bowel and very close to the rectum so we will see if a join can be done. That’s up to the surgeon on the day.
The walking is coming on now with me doing approx 4 miles a day. To date I have lost 6 pounds that’s roughly two a week.

I will take things as they come but hope for a good result.

    thanks again

  • That’s brilliant four miles a day and six pounds lighter. I was unable to do that but I did the exercises they gave me and eating was challenging so I upped my proteins with complan twice a day. It definitely gave me an energy boost. My op was very big I had 10cm rectal tumour.I had incision and keyhole. Signed to say maybe permanent however had reversible Ileostomy and home in five days.
it’s such a relief to get that cancer in the bin.
keep working out you’ll be in great shape for the op.

    Hi,

yes I surprised myself but I must admit I’m pushing it daily as I really can’t be bothered lol. My tumour is 3 1/2 cm so not too bad considering yours. I will keep at it.

    take care

  • Yep keep going.  I decided in what I can only put down to 'morphine euphoria' to do a charity 10k on behalf of the Liverpool Royal.   I thought I hated running until I started training,  it was then I realised 'hate' is nowhere strong enough  to express my feelings,  detest & loathe would be nearer the mark.

Keep up the walking until the day you go in and start it up again asap. I was 58 at the time of operation, so no spring chicken.

YNWA  - welcome to the reds Luis Diaz

  • That’s the way Bink

    You’re fighting it now.
It’s a really positive attitude. Get yourself prepared then let the medics sort it.
My tumour was ridiculous and my fault. I should of insisted on a colonoscopy with my GP. Thank goodness bowel screening or I would have been an emergency!
