Hi, I had a full ileostomy in late August following my tumour bursting and life saving surgery. I am getting on quite well with diet and find I can eat most foods The issue I am finding is that my Stoma bag leaks quite frequently. I have found some items on here that I will be trying such as heating the bags slightly before putting them on so that the adhesive sticks better. I use Dansac Nova bags and change them daily. The sealing part of the bags is square in shape. Does anyone on here use the banana rings to increase adhesion and confidence and if so which brand?
Hi. Relentless
Like Kath I use convex, I was switched week two as I needed to allow my stoma to form. The Sensura mio bags I use also have a belt if I feel insecure though big knickers do the job better.
I also use Eakin slims. They’re not that sticky more like a blue tac feel. They look like a washer shape. I pull it to the shape of my stoma I’m a loop ileostomy so I’m not perfectly round. I fit it tight around my stoma then the convex pouch which has a slightly bigger hole cut. Then hold them in place with the warm hand. I have found the slims help protect my skin from burning but if I don’t push it tight my stoma’s output can pancake
I have had a few problems not long ago and tried lots of different tactics then Aldan mentioned that sometimes the bags don’t stick that they’re faulty or old stock. Interestingly I’ve noticed if the label that I pull off if it doesn’t come off whole they don’t stick. Maybe they’re old stock or been stored the wrong temperature in the warehouse.
It’s just my opinion. Time will tell when I’ve used my last order.
I use the banana rings if I’m not in my own bed as double protection. But removing it can be tiresome.
Usually I change every other day.

The banana strips work well it’s a double insurance. They’re really good but check that your skins not getting burned underneath by output. That’s what happened to me. It took a while to sort.
Good luck
Ann
Using convex bags I have never needed any extras like belts or banana strips(dont know what they are )so nice and easy

HI Andy,
I used to use Salts confidence bags and found them very good, also coloplast seals (much like the ones Artsie Ann mentioned) together with the flange extenders when really necessary. The one other thing I used not mentioned so far was a spray called Protect by Stocare which not only helps protect the skin but gives a slightly better adhesion for what goes on top. Your skin must be perfectly dry before putting anything on.
Hope you find a solution, John
Hi Relentless
Another vote for convex bags from me. They were a game changer after weeks of trying various brands of flat bags. I use Pelican ones with added vitamin E (allergic to some of the other brands, unfortunately). I warm them on the radiator, wrapped in a towel, before applying them and, once they're in place, keep my hand over them for a full 60 seconds. No leaks since.
I've used flange extenders (banana strips) occasionally as a "belt and braces" approach but, as Artsie says, take care that there's no output leaking under the baseplate as it will burn.
We have a stoma support group here too which I've found hugely helpful if you fancy checking in -

Hi my husband Pete had the same trouble, he had some terrible times. But there are some things that they call bananas/flanges they stick on top of the bags to make sure that they are stuck down properly. I know Pete`s problem was because he has a hernis in his stoma, but they did help. Also hi had Hollister stoma bags, very good, also sometimes it was to do with the material the sticky piece was made of.
Good luck hope that this helps.
